The spinny staff dude is Gambit, who was awesome in the cartoons and I maybe had an enormous crush on him whe I was fifteen. But I gather he's less awesome in this movie and that they sort of just stuck him in because fans complained that he never made it into the X-Men movies.

He was pretty cool in the movie, but his intro to the movie franchise was just so random. Especially since you know he doesn't show up in the three existing movies. So it's like, here's a cool dude, but never mind, you won't see him again.

Yeah, I think they didn't really know where to put him in the movie-verse. In the comics and cartoons, he's romantically involved in a difficult sort of way with Rogue (whose real name is Marie OMG WE ARE MEANT TO BE) and in the movie's she's a teenager and has that whole thing with Iceman. *shrug*
