I feel like the fantasy genre has gone downhill...

More and more lately, I notice that the advancement of special effects and the general growth of Hollywood budgets has taken a negative toll on the fantasy/adventure genre in modern film (animated movies notwithstanding).  Studios are shelling out big bucks to make a picture visually impressive, create eye-catching trailers to try to outdo each ( Read more... )

I think movies in general have really gone downhill, and they definitely haven't gotten any shorter. Movies used to be about 90 minutes, and now we have 2.5 to 3 hour movies where absolutely nothing even happens.

I know what you mean specifically about fantasy movies and special effects though. Josh went on an Amazon shopping spree recently and got a bunch of old movies from our childhoods. We just watched The Neverending Story on Saturday and I'd forgotten how much I loved that. Sure, the effects were cheesy because it's the 80s, but the story makes up for it. Now it's the other way around -- the snazzy effects are supposed to make up for the lack of story.

And also since you mentioned The Dark Crystal (and we just watched that again recently too), did you know that there were people inside the puppets? I didn't know that until we watched the documentary of the making of it that came with the DVD. My mind was totally blown!

*shrugs* This is the first year in awhile I've wanted to go to the movies once, or more than once. I liked Alice and Sweeney Todd, thought movies like Avatar were closer to what you're angry about. Not to mention what story it has, it ripped off from other movies.

The movie was closer than the cartoon was, at least. I dunno if Caroll would fit into the story, he was never in the books. I always considered both Alices as seperate people.
