“But I wanna go too.” Wally pleaded.
“Tough tamales.” Chloe put her foot down. Wally was far too pesky to go reporting with.
“Please oh please! I’ll run ‘em down for you.”
But Chloe was not having any of the red heads on the knees declarations and gallant promises. No matter how cute he looked doing it.
What am I thinking? He’s not cute!
He might come in handy though, as a backup in case of trouble. So how to keep him busy enough that he would not get in her way but still feel like he’s helping and want to go on errands for her was the question her mind raced to answer.
She scanned the grounds as Wally shook waiting for her answer.
Just then, Lex walked onto the playground with several of the biggest and toughest boys in school. He started talking to them, obviously giving orders. Her hunch was true that he was probably the mover and salt shaker of the school.
Oh, great. More goons. Now I’ll never get near enough to catch any big breaks on him.
“Anything. You name it, and I’ll do it.”
“Anything?” She said to stall. To get close to the center of the action there, you couldn’t look suspicious. But she would stick out like a sore thumb.
“I swear by my underwear!” He crossed his fingers.
“Eww.”
Then, a brilliant thought struck her.
Lex would expect her trying to ask questions. He probably was also used to kids watching on him to tattle or to be picked on. He was plenty suspicious no matter who he talked to. Wally also would be way obvious, ‘cause he liked her and kept wanting to tell her everything, no matter how silly the thought was. But she wondered if he had ever encountered a fake spy.
Wally could pretend to be another bodyguard of his, and that would let him in onto where Luthor would be and what he would be doing at all times. But he would never really get close. The real catch would be him as an annoyer. While Lex had to use his brain to keep the hyper boy busy, she would come out of left field and he wouldn’t know what had hit him. He’d have his hands full.
He might have gotten her the first round, but now she was on to his game.
“Pretend to be Lex’s bodyguard. Can you do that?” She asked as if in challenge.
“You bet! I could do that in my sleep!” He jumped into the air.
“Tell me what he’s up to behind the slide right after recess.”
“Piece of cake!”
With that, he quickly reached for one of her hands and held it in his own for a moment. They were larger than hers, not by much, but he was still careful to be as gentle as if he were holding something very precious. He stared at her, his blue eyes twinkling.
“You can count on me.”
A split second later he reddened and darted away before she could react.
He’s not cute.
She had to be serious, she told herself.
Not cute at all.
Chloe shook her head at such a weird thought.
Don’t eat the mystery meat again.
She turned to started to march towards her first investigative report.
And walked face first into a tether ball pole.
