Last night, my laptop suddenly shut off twice. It's done it before due to overheating, but that was a long, long time ago. I have two Dells and only one of them had ever done that. It would shut off if I moved the power cable a certain way...

It's not overheating so much as it is the power coupling in the comp itself. likely it's worn, or there's a burnt-out wire somewhere. You mention abysmal battery life - if the comp is past a certain age, the battery does need to be replaced. They last about...2-3 years at the best. Mine is a 6-hour that now only runs for 4 and I dread the day I have to shell on a new one (Inspiron E1405 here).

If you're able to access a Geek Squad, have them check out the power coupling.
