I think it depends on the kinds of things they do. I mean, I'm not sure if the things this person does can be measured on a degree of selfishness. Like if the things this person does are minor annoyances, you might be able to get closer and, not neccessarily "make them see the light" but maybe give them good cause for some self-reflection. If it's a selfishness that really pisses you off or angers you, maybe keeping your distance would be the best option because if you get close and the things this person does doesn't stop, then you might feel as though the effort to try to become friends with this person were a waste and it'll more than likely hurt.

My two cents. Well, upon checking the conversion rate: five yen.
