So, there has been a bit of noise about the ALP and their proposed policy to make completion of Year 12 compulsory for all kids.  I know you have all been waiting for me to voice my opinion, because you know I have one.
Well... here is the transcript from my recent interview with the Spence on 702*:

I'm an ex-secondary school teacher. I see it from both a principled point of view and a practical point of view.

Principally, education is critical in having a questioning public and for the future success of each person. I agree with your point of view.

Practically, I point to an experience I had with a moron in Year 9. No matter how much I suggested he could progress by paying attention in class, he had made up his mind at that early stage that he would follow in his father's footsteps - he would become a garbageman. I'm not criticising garbagepeople, but my point is that there is a significant number of students who lack the motivation to continue studies to Year 12, no matter how much you may have remedial lessons and behavioural programmes in school.

It's a tricky one. The theoretical Left in me seeks access and success for all; practical experience tells me otherwise.

Yeah, I agree, those who choose not to be there, shouldn't be forced to be there. I am worried about those who would like the choice but for whom it is not available... in my humble opinion, making it compulsory wont enhance opportunities.
