I'm kind of obsessive about reading the same half dozen or so sites every day: Slate.com and pitchforkmedia.com are two of them, which is why I found this article so amusing ( Read more... )

I like Slate a lot, but I've never read Pitchfork. After reading what Slate has to say about Pitchfork, I'm glad I've never read it. I read enough bad writing at work.

Besides, the only music reviews I can remember reading are those on artists I already know and like.

As Billy Joel says: "There's a new band in town, but you can't get the sound from a story in a magazine."

Well, the point is Pitchfork is pretentious and verbose just to be pretentious and verbose, but that's why we love it. Yes, I tend to scream at my iBook in frustration when they give a good band a horrible review or string together unneccesarily large words just to be clever, but in all, I enjoy their reviews, interviews and features.
