Rewatching 9-4 Slumber Party : PART 2
Part 1 is HERE
And then he hears Sam calling to him. Dean calls back, but not to Sam - to Zeke.
As Sam comes into view, suddenly his eyes flash and he is Zeke.
Zeke tells Dean that he can’t keep bringing people back to life. It takes a lot out of him, which means all the longer he needs to stay in Sam. He can help with the witch or Charlie. Dean has to choose.
Dean of course chooses Charlie. Zeke touches her forehead and zaps life into her.
She sits up with a gasp,
CHARLIE: Merry Christmas!
… and in so doing, throws Zeke against the wall.
He falls unconscious, but Sam soon wakes up and wants to know what happened. Dean tells him that Charlie was zapped. Sam must have been too. They are like, why didn't we die then? Dean explains that he got a bullet in her and she fled through the vents. Dorothy, who’s caught up for the explanation, suggests the witch is wounded so is easier to catch. There is one more bullet in Charlie’s gun. Sam and Dean take it, while Dorothy stays behind with Charlie.
CHARLIE: Can we be best friends now?
We have a short scene here where Sam and Dean are going through the corridors looking for the witch and Sam asks Dean why he was calling someone called Zeke. Who’s Zeke? Dean deflects.
Charlie tells Dorothy about the dream she had of Christmas with her parents. Dorothy knows the truth. Interesting she didn’t go into it with Dean.
DOROTHY: Dream? Charlie, you died. Don't worry about it, though. You're not a real hunter until you've died and come back again.
CHARLIE: Slow down. Why would you think I died?
DOROTHY: Heaven -- it's your dream life. And if you were zapped by the Wicked Witch. Instant death. I would know. She killed me, too.
Interesting point about how you’re not a real hunter until you’ve died and come back. I’m sure many have died and not come back, but Sam and Dean… LOL and Charlie was lucky enough to come back too. So… now she’s a real hunter according to Dorothy.
CHARLIE: Okay. Let's rewind here a bit. When did you die?
DOROTHY: In Oz. My father was obsessed with his work as a Man of Letters, and then I was born... and nothing changed. He would keep his work a secret, but I was such a curious kid. I was always looking for trouble, looking for the next big adventure.
CHARLIE: I know the feeling.
So Dorothy is more like Charlie than Sam.
DOROTHY:I stowed away on one of his cases, wound up in the emerald city, accidentally got left behind. It was terrifying.
CHARLIE: Well, what happened?
DOROTHY:I met up with these three freedom fighters, and they thought I was this child of destiny chosen to kill the Wicked Witch. They protected me, and then the witch turned them into --
CHARLIE: A scarecrow, a tin man, and a lion?
DOROTHY:And then she hunted me down and killed me.
This is a very interesting story. An adult version of Wizard of Oz. I’d love to read it. I wonder how she came back to life.
Let's talk about Dorothy's dad here. I think the key point here is that he kept his work a secret from her. That must have given her various feelings, but one of these was the romantic notion of adventure - because her dad kept the truth from her to try to keep her safe. Compare that to Sam and Dean's dad, who told them about everything when they were relatively young (Dean ended up telling Sam but I don't think John would have kept it from Sam for long in any case.) He took them on his hunts and taught them to be ready for danger, and even though that didn't prevent them from dying, it sure wasn't on their first "adventure" like Dorothy or Tom Jenkins, and they went into it with their eyes wide open, knowing the dangers.
Hmmm… Wait a minute. Keeping secrets… Like Dean keeping the secret from Sam? This is probably a warning that Sam should have been told. But also, going back to Dorothy telling Charlie that you are not a hunter until you've died once... obviously this also means that someone has to bring you back too, for you to be a true hunter. Sort of a justification for Dean saving Sam and assertion that Sam is a hunter now because Dean brought him back. Not that he wasn't before, but what I'm getting at is, he still has work to do, work that should not be stopped by death.
Sorry for the lengthy talk here but I have to also note the parallel between Sam and Dean vs the freedom fighters as I mentioned before. Sam and Dean try to protect Charlie against the witch just as the freedom fighters protect Dorothy. And Charlie dies just like Dorothy did... Sam and Dean do get turned into weird servants of the witch too LOL and Charlie comes back to life just like Dorothy did.
OK, back to Sam and Dean. Dean goes into convo mode suddenly while they are searching for the witch and asks Sam why he hadn’t “moved in” and made the bunker his home. Sam explains how he really never had a house he could call “home” like Dean had had with mom and dad.
SAM:I don't have any memories of home. And whenever I've tried to make a home of my own, it really hasn't ended well.
DEAN:Yeah, but a lifetime of abandoned buildings and crappy motel rooms. I mean, this is about as close to home as we're gonna get, and it's ours.
We go back to Charlie and Dorothy. Dorothy tells Charlie how once she got back from OZ, her dad became a writer of worthless kids books and she became a hunter. But Charlie points out again that the books weren’t worthless. They were priceless guidebooks for Dorothy. Her dad cared for her and wanted to help her.
Sam and Dean can’t find the witch, but just as they are wondering if she is gone, she appears behind Sam with a knife to his throat and tries to zap Dean with her magic.
She can’t because Dean makes a dash at her and Sam and pushes them all backward. The witch then grabs Sam’s forehead and take possession of his head and then Dean’s. She tells them to kill the girls.
Charie and Dorothy are in the garage - the first time we see it! There among other things she finds the red heels she took from the wicked witch in saddle bag for her cool bike. She never actually wore the shoes.
DOROTHY:No. I never actually wore them. Seemed kind of tacky wearing a dead woman's shoes. Plus, I'm no good in heels, you know?
CHARLIE:I don't suppose we could just wish her away?
DOROTHY: Sorry. Another thing the books got wrong. But, like the poppies, these have magic from Oz -- sharp magic.
CHARLIE: Oh. Death by shoe?
The possessed boys catch up to them and tell them how much they look forward to killing them and instead of escaping to OZ, bringing her armies here.
While that is happening, the witch is opening the door with the key. It’s OZ and she is cackling the best she can without a tongue. Dean has Charlie and Sam has Dorothy on the ground, but after an apology, Charlie kicks Dean in the balls and he crumbles, while Dorothy gets away from Sam and throws the shoe to Charlie. Charlie runs.
The witch is doing a spell to call her minions. Sam has captured Dorothy and Dean is ready to kill her. The witch is looking out to OZ when suddenly her eyes flash. Charlie has stabbed her in the back of the head with the heel of the shoe.
CHARLIE: Now heel!
LOL. I’m not sure what she does, just shove her, or stab her again from the front?
Anyway, the witch is gone and Dean, who was savoring the moment before the kill (as villains always do) comes back to himself along with Sam.
Charlie barely closes the door before the monkeys get through.
She looks back, and there are the two heels (which should have still been in the witch) along with the spell ingredients that the witch left scattered on the floor. The key is returned to the coat pocket on the floor as well. Magic.
CHARLIE: Ding Dong Bitches!
We see Sam angrily putting Crowley back in his collar, giving him a crayon and paper again and turning the light out as he leaves. Crowley is disgruntled.
CROWLEY: Aah! Really, after all I did with Ms. defying gravity? Bollocks.
The four hunters are in the parking garage. Baby is in the garage along with the other cars now. Sam gives Dorothy a copy of the Wizard of Oz that he found in the archives.
DOROTHY: You have no idea how odd it is having a series of books written about you.
SAM: Actually, I-I do know, uh, and it is definitely weird. But you know what? End of the day, it's our story, so we get to write it.
An important theme of the ep. Letting go and not trying to control or "protect" the lives of our loved ones. It’s theirs to write. Also maybe a hint about what is to come with Metatron.
Charlie mentions to Dean that she knows.
CHARLIE: So, thanks for the slumber party...
DEAN: Mm....
CHARLIE: and bringing me back from the dead.
DEAN:Uh, I didn't.
CHARLIE: Don't B.S. a B.S.er. Am I a zombie now? Do I need to eat brains?
DEAN: No, no, no. You're you. You're gonna be fine, all right? Just, um -- just keep this between us, okay?
CHARLIE:All right, but only 'cause you raised me from the dead, which you're going to have to explain to me later.
DEAN: All right.
And here, Dorothy tells everyone she has to go end the rebellion. She asks Charlie if she’s coming with. Dean’s like, but it’s dangerous. But Charlie is so up for it.
Sam tells her that if she ever needs them, to tap on the heels three times. Charlie tells them ditto. Family helps each other through the difficulties and support them instead of keeping danger from them. Sam and Dean’s dad prepared them and taught them about the big bads. Dorothy’s dad kept it from her but when she decided to wade in, he accepted it and provided her with guidance, which, once she realized it, she appreciated. Charlie and the boys now have each other. Bringing it back to Sam and Dean and Dean’s secret, it is obvious to me that the ep is saying that Dean should have been open with Sam and accepted Sam’s decision because it is his life and his story afterall. But also it was done out of love, and even though Sam may not understand that at first, just as Dorothy didn’t understand her dad’s writing kids books about her adventures, he will understand in the end.
I'm sorry to do this, but in my defense, I just wanted a gif of the Emerald City and it would have been petty to cut Charlie out of it. But WHY does her face make me want to punch her? LOL Those of you who feel the same, let's move on to the next gif quickly.
