The parallels to season 5: Sam choosing to throw himself in the Cage and asking Dean to let him do it vs. Dean planning to throw himself in the ocean and not tell Sam what he was going to do...
THIS LINE: Sam you're the last person I could tell, the last person I could be around because you're the only one that could talk me out of it. It is too perfect and it killed me that Dean said it out loud to Sam. (My personal thought is that Dean didn't say goodbye to Cas because he was going to call Cas to lock Dean in and oversee throwing him in the ocean because Dean knows that Cas would argue but wouldn't change Dean's mind and ultimately Cas would do what Dean wanted.)
Did the book Billie gave Dean say 'Billie gives Dean a book with instructions on how to build the box that will trap an archangel'? So many times when faced with 'this is the Winchester destiny' Dean has said nope. I think Michael banging in his head is keeping him from fighting what he's being told is inevitable.
Oh yes. Of course these are very similar situations! As for the reasoning behind Dean not wanting to tell Sam - I connected this with Dean giving in to Sam in Season 10 and killing Death instead of living eternity a the ends of the universe. Very similar situation there too. Dean would give in to Sam ... because he loves him... even if it meant the end of the world

Oh, I totally missed this and you are absolutely right!
I gave it a great for some reason. My finger hovered between great and awesome and I could've given it an awesome because of that end and all the Winchester goodness and Dean welding and Nick being much less annoying than usual. :D
I'm not quite sure that that was exactly it - that Dean had to be locked in and thrown into the sea with Michael - only that he had to think it was the only way.
Oooooo, it would be a good twist that Dean in thinking that there is a way to keep Michael under control forever would get enough strength to keep Michael under control. Also, I'm now thinking if it is possible to be possessed by two archangels at the same time, because just load up Nick with them and toss him into the sea. Problems solved. ;)
I did too! I had the exact same problem. I actually was going to give it an awesome but, I've always rated eps awesome only if I enjoyed every scene and although the Nick scenes were necessary, I didn't particularly enjoy them and would def skip them on rewatch so... Great. XD
That is an interesting idea! Ooooo.... it will be interesting to see Nick's role in the future.
