Jensen's Thoughts on Season 12

The Gold Panel with Jeffrey Dean Morgan, there was the question of what it would have been like if dad had come back in Season 12 instead of mom and this was Jensen's answer:

I loved what Jensen said too, it shows how much he cares about his character and his insights are spot on. John would've been the obvious choice but Mary was the one he needed to have returned.

It makes total sense, but I though it made sense for Mary to be coming back in the first place.

I agree. I think Jensen said that for Jeff´s benefit. But, it still felt it strange that he´d ´want mom back´ the most. I can understand the need to forgive her more than just having her back.

I didn't really question the return of Mary after episodes like What Is And What Should Never Be, as we've been showed snippets along the way that maybe hinted that Dean was initially closer to Mary.
But I do very much like this explanation too, it makes sense.

Yes! It makes it more meaningful doesn't it? To me, WIAWSNB came from the wish that Mary had never died, which is a bit different from wanting her back from the dead, you know? If that is really what he wanted the most, he would have done something about it, maybe, like he did with Sam. So, to me, it seems a bit weird without that added meaning of wanting her back ...to talk to her. But you can also interpret the whole thing as Amara misunderstanding Dean's thoughts because she just doesn't understand humans.

Either works, but I really liked Jensen's view on it, as it gives it all a deeper meaning.
