Snagged from wings128 :D

Hardback or paperback:
Fantasy, Sci-Fi and other FUN books I usually buy in paperback. I want to really curl up with it, you know? Hardbacks are very hard to get comfortable with.

Serious books (History mostly) OR books that I cannot wait for the paperback, I'll get in hardback.

Borrow or buy:Buy. If I enjoy a book I want it on ( Read more... )

For me, both TV and movie adaptations... love Game of Thrones, the Expanse, on TV, and lots of the rings, Harry potter etc as movies... but some adaptations are dead awful :'(

Grabbing the meme XD

There are two movie exceptions as of now - I did enjoy Harry Potter and LoTR. Those were done very well, I thought, even though I'd read the books first. But I like reading them better :D

Have fun!

Or when the publisher changes sizes mid series.
THIS! OMG! This annoys me so much! Worse when they change the cover design half way through a series. This was why when I started out my biggest concerns were book size, if they would be portable in places like handbags, car glove compartments, etc, and making sure I had cover designs I was absolutely happy with because I wouldn't be changing them part way through the series.

It's one of the reasons I never by boxsets of movie series before I know for certain there will be no more. There's nothing worse than buying a boxset only to have a later movie of one released, it's awful on the shelf.

I'll probably snag this meme.

Yes! That annoys me so much too! It just messes up the whole flow of my bookcase and it annoys me to no end.

As a child I always preferred fantasy to sci-fi, because sci-fi books tended to be colder, darker, and more nihilistic. But there was always sci-fi I enjoyed, and there's plenty of overlap there, and exceptions to the "sci-fi is colder" rule.

Sci-fi in general is more focused on the future, and fantasy more focused on the past (Even present-day stories often involve the past - see American Gods with its ancient deities, or any story that involves an old artifact or prophecy). I was always more attached to the past ( ... )

I think I know what you mean about sci-fi being colder, and in that sense, I definitely love the "human" interactions of the past/fantasy more than sci-fi. But to me the themes of both are often very similar; most often critiquing present/past issues and problems in society and environment and very often based on the conflict between good and evil. Kind of hard to explain, but they are both a way to look at reality from different angles. What I can't understand is people who say they don't like fantasy or sci-fi because they are not real enough. That view of "reality" just seems so shallow.

Right? How can someone know someone at first sight, aye? Plus, stories with love at first sight are way too sappy ;D

Yeah, they both take place in worlds that do not currently exist. I've said that sci-fi stories take place in worlds that could exist, while fantasy stories take place in worlds that could never exist. But it's the same thing, another level of non-existence from regular fiction stories. Games of pretend upon games of pretend. So much time spent imagining what isn't. But is time spent thinking about things that are not any more poorly spent then that spent thinking about things that are?
