What did you think of this episode? I'd love to hear from you in the following poll and/or in the comments!
Poll Outlander 1-14 My thoughts -
I think this episode was pretty good - I'd even rate it at GREAT for reasons that it made me cry at least three times and laugh with embarrassment for poor Murtagh at least once. Damn it really pulled at the heartstrings this time. But maybe I'm just emotional. It's mother's day, I have three wonderful children and a mom I miss terribly so that might have something to do with it.
The best scenes for me were (1) The talk between Jenny and Claire as Jenny relieved her breasts, (2)The talk between Claire and Murtagh when Claire apologizes, (3) Willie's speech when Claire recruited among the MacKenzies. The best part of this is that only one of these scenes is actually the same as the book.
I want to go through the episode with screencaps though because that wasn't all I liked.
First of all, Ian looks so much better with his hair down and a bit of blood on him <3<3 What is it about guys, they just look so hot with a bit of blood?! Poor guy, the women were a bit harsh with him here... "You don't have your leg" and "You have a wounded arm," you can't go. But of course Claire has an even better reason. They couldn't put Lallybroch in danger. It's a good thing he suggests a map, though. How on earth was she planning on looking for Jamie without one?
Jenny coming with her because she knows the terraine, Claire looks up for devine help, trying to hold back her tears.... Again - Claire, how on earth were you planning on looking for Jamie all by yourself?
We recognize that field where Jamie was shown "the watch." Jenny recognizes crows circling over the dead.
Yes, they are close...
Jenny prays over the dead Scotts and Claire adds her "amen."
Talking about how milk just spurts out once the baby starts sucking - (it's not that easy for every mom/baby) but there is a conversation here about how everything about raising babies is a nuisance, but no one would ever choose not to have one (cry here and smile and nod to possible Mother's Day reference?), and Claire turns around, unable to hide her feelings about how she so wants a child and believes she cannot. Heartwrenching.
Just love those shots of them crouching over the camp together <3
Jenny tries to make Claire understand that the guy has to be killed. TBH I would have rather Claire explained about how, being a healer, the fact they had to kill someone had been hard to accept at first, or something. Especially since she had gone for her box of equipment to heal him. A bit more explanation would have been good, that's all.
The hug and goodbye I loved. I felt that they got to know eachother a bit better (although, not enough - they really should have taken more time with the Lallybroch) and respected each other for their strengths and become friends, aye?
Another problematic relationship here LOL Claire judging Murtagh without knowing him properly, Murtagh not saying enough and being all -- you do as I say. *sighs*
I'll say Claire is a pretty good singer, and we see her get used to it as time goes by! Poor Murtagh doesn't do very well with his dancing though, and stops after a while :P
Another riding scene because I really like those... and finding the gypsies - Murtagh has met his match LOL
(But of course Claire will not tell him that to his face :D)
Claire gives away all the money so that they will stop singing and she can continue to sing the song. Murtagh isn't happy because he knows the gypsies will not keep their word, and she's given all the money away that they need.
I can understand that by this time, she is putting all her hope in and clinging to this one song - even though she had been so reluctant in the beginning. Murtagh tells her she is being stubborn and that it's not going to work, but that doesn't stop her.
So Murtagh suggests again that she is being stubborn about this and it's not working... and Claire angrily suggests that he doesn't know what it's like to lose someone. And he tells her his story. Of course, it's quite a different "losing" to Claire's and I don't think it was relevant at this point, but he does go on to explain that this is WHY he loves Jamie as his son. And THAT, and Claire's apology and their HUG... where Claire was finally able to find some release for her pent up emotions regarding Jamie to a person who loved him just as much...were touching enough that I had a little cry.
Come to think of it, it is another mention of "parenthood" after Jenny's talk isn't it?
Claire defers to Murtagh, and Murtagh concedes to Claire. Might as well keep on like they have been - start at the beginning again.
I liked this scene between Claire and the gypsy. How she did not give in and give him money (of course not!) and how he gave in and told her anyway (for love) and how she kissed him and thanked him "from one gypsy to another." (You know, Claire and Murtagh could have just let them sing the song - told the gypsies they would pay for information (give them a message for Jamie) and waited for the results.
"Don't you dare speak of him as if he were already dead!"
If there's a chance that I can save them then I have to try. But if I fail, or if he's already dead, I'll marry you.
Claire and Dougal come to an agreement.
Claire: If the situation were reversed Jamie would come for every one of you.
Willie: Jamie's always looked after me. Protected me. On the road, Leoch. I ken if it was me about to meet the hangman's noose, he'd come for me. Try to set me free.
This was very moving. Claire talking about "honoring blood" sounded rather silly though.
Murtagh: That was the easy part.
Love how Claire is leading the men, and she looks the leader <3<3
Talk about the book under the cut :)
So, there were differences, and I did love those scenes in the book too, so I wanted to talk about those as well. First, the scene between Jenny and Claire - it was Jenny that asked Claire about anything that she had to tell them, (Claire didn't feel "burdened as a prophet" until she did, and I think that would have been more natural. I really liked that scene in the book. I don't remember there being such a conflict with Murtagh either and the stuff with the gypsies... why they had to change that like they did I don't know, even though I liked the ending.
The scene with Dougal... I loved how, in the book, Murtagh had been hiding and came in later when Claire was being threatened(about to be raped, actually). They were so much more prepared and Murtagh so much smarter! So much about that scene was different - with Dougal admitting to making Hamish for Collum, Dougal giving Claire money toward saving Jamie.... There was no deal. except regarding the men and money. But it didn't bother me too much.
It was also Rupert, not Willie, who swayed the men with a "Aye lass, why not?" Which showed how much they accepted not only Jamie, but Claire (to the surprise of Dougal!). It also shows how much the Scottish guys like a good fight/challenge - this episode, they looked like a bunch of cowards like Claire said. But as I said, I still liked the scene, very much. It was moving, while the "Aye lass, why not?" may have been a bit of a let down LOL
