Author’s note: Big thanks goes to acinogan for prompting me again and again to dip my toes in Veronica Mars water. And betaing too. She’s awesome and if you don’t love her, you should. I’m just saying.

Logan’s drunken mind barely focuses on Trina’s words as he sits in the car, staring outside at the sky. She’s going on and on about how she wanted to go out and have fun tonight, but instead she had to come pick up him. Dad’s going to be upset with him. He rolls his eyes at her and gives her a snarky reply about how their father is always upset with him. Trina defends their father, claiming that he’s going through a hard time right now. Logan just laughs in response.

Like it’s not a hard time for him? He has to go to school every day, getting fake sympathy from students and teachers. He’s no longer Logan, son of Aaron Echolls, but now he’s also Logan, the guy whose mom killed herself. And it sucks. He doesn’t want their pity. The way they stare at him at every turn. The way they whisper when they think he’s not listening. “Poor Logan. First Lilly, and now his mother.” They’re probably all talking about the display he made at the dance.
Good, let them talk. Let them think he’s some kind of destructive force of nature. He doesn’t care. He doesn’t.

It doesn’t matter that the only person who’s honestly comforted him (there’s a big difference between comfort and pity) was someone that he was so angry at. As soon as he saw Trina, everything he tried to hold back just crumpled inside of him, and then suddenly Veronica was holding him, just letting him cry, and it had felt surprisingly nice.
He isn’t used to being comforted.

They get to the house and Trina makes her way to the other side of the car to help him out. He pushes her away, laughing, playing the fool, trying his best to keep from laughing again as he stumbles his way inside of the house.

He wishes Veronica had taken him home instead of his stupid sister. Okay, so she clearly had a date at the dance, but it’s not even like that, Logan’s positive, it’s not. He just wants someone to understand. Comfort, not pity. Maybe she can kind of understand, he thinks. After all, her mom left her too. Not in such a permanent sense, but it all sucks one way or another.
Maybe he’s been wrong to have been so hard on her after Lilly’s death. He makes a vow to try to be nicer to her, even just a little bit. But not too much. He has a reputation to uphold, after all.

Still, as he slides down onto a couch, no longer able to fight to stay conscious, he can’t help but think of Veronica. He dreams of her holding him again.

He feels comforted.
