Title: Someone Must Get Hurt
Pairing: Sylar/Elle
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Sylar’s thoughts on why he decided to kill Elle that night on the beach. Inspired by the song “Someone Must Get Hurt” by She Wants Revenge.
Author’s Note: I know, I need to work on my WiPs more, but the idea for this story’s been in my head since I saw SWR in concert last night, so I just gave into it. Actually, a lot of their songs really make me think of Sylar and Elle, but this one particularly stuck with me.
The decision is in that I won't break
You cut and you run with our lives at stake
Well, someone might get hurt and it won't be me
The decision is in there will be no fight
It might sound cold but I know it’s right
'Cause someone must get hurt and it won't be me
-“Someone Must Get Hurt” She Wants Revenge
“You’re hurting me,” She whimpered underneath him, and for a second, he thinks of letting her go. He could apologize and hug and kiss away her fear, and it could be okay.
But then, his mind reasons that there’s no point, because eventually, they would just end up hurting one another again. Because that’s all their relationship was built on, a cycle of hurt, fear and betrayal. And that would always undo whatever love and attraction they felt for one another.
She had started the cycle that day in his shop, filling his head with smiles and lies. He had believed her then. That he didn’t need powers to be special. He could be special on his own, as long as he had her by his side. But she had been lying. She brought in that other boy, smiling and paying attention to Trevor the way she had been to him just a few days before. And then he realized it. It had all be a lie. When she shocked him, it hurt down to his very core. She was special too, but she hadn’t even bothered sharing it with him. He had trusted her with everything, and she never returned the favor. She had played him for a fool, and he chased her out of the apartment, only seeing one road ahead of him then. He couldn’t be saved.
And then when he was being held in Primatech he learned more about her. That she was an agent, daughter of one of the founders. He wanted to go after her right away, but he knew he had to be stronger, better. Despite how sweet and innocent she had acted, in actuality, she was one of the best trained fighters the company had.
He filed the information away then, knowing it would eventually come in handy. And it did. When he finally broke into the Company, he went after her father first, knowing that would hurt her most, send her coming to him. And she did. There was nothing quite as satisfying as that moment he turned the gun into gold, taunting her with her own father’s power. He almost felt bad, but she deserved it. She was the one who had set him down this route. And then he tried to kill her, but she fought back, sending out a wave of energy strong enough to knock him out (even with his healing power), and shut down all the power in the building..
The next time he saw her, she was weak, and begging him to hurt her, kill her, take her pain away. But he couldn’t do it. He was trying so hard to be different, and all he could remember was that was once upon a time, before all the betrayal, she had helped him. She had been his savior, his own personal angel. And maybe now, they could help each other. He got rid of her pain, and she taught him a way to get power without killing. It had seemed like a turning point, at the time. Maybe they could stop hurting each other now. He felt hopeful for the first time in ages.
And then there had been her little stunt at the rental place, trying to push him, test him. He had failed in that moment, killing once more. Another tiny betrayal, but he didn’t stay mad about it along. Maybe they were more alike than he originally thought. They could be bad without being bad to one another, right?
And then they were powerless, kissing and making love and all he could see was her. She seemed perfect. They could run off together, be happy, but Bennett came in and spoiled everything. He died trying to protect her, but their pride is what really did them in. They could have turned away from Pinehearst, gone off and tried to start a life together, but neither one of them even thought of doing so once they had their powers back. It had been a sweet idea, being normal without parents or powers but that’s all it had been, a nice idea.
They both had felt the need for revenge, and that’s why they really showed up at the Bennett household. Claire was just a convenient excuse. Bennet. They could never be normal. They could never be truly happy. He would never fully forgive her for what she turned him into, and he could tell from that look in her eyes that she would never fully forgive him for killing her father.
When he showed up on the beach first he was trying desperately to make sense of his thoughts, but they were going a mile a minute. She showed up soon afterwards and he reached for her, hoping for some reassurance. Maybe he was wrong.
Then she flinched. She was acting more like a victim than a lover in that moment. Maybe she already could see what was coming.
And it became clear; she had been lying to him again. She was going to hurt him again. But he wasn’t going to let her. He couldn’t afford to let her. He had too much to accomplish. He had to find his real parents, who he really was. And if that meant becoming the monster, Sylar, once more, then so be it. She apparently knew about his real parents, that they weren’t the Petrellis, but what cost would he have to pay to get the information from her? What would be exchanging? He wouldn’t be something she could try to control. He would break the cycle here and now. And so that’s why when she whimpered and whispered those words, all he could do was look down at her with a dark smile.
“I know”
He whispered, bringing his fingers up as he began to telekinetically cut through her head. Not that he needed to open it. He already had her power, but it was the way he was used to killing, it practically came to second nature to him.
He realized now that he had no point, even if he loved her, even if they loved each other, it wasn’t enough. And he couldn’t risk allowing her to win. Eventually, one of them was going to get really hurt, and they wouldn’t be able to look past it like they had done in the past.
So he crossed that line, going a step beyond hurting. He killed her, like he tried to do that day in Level 5 of the Primatech building. But this time she didn’t charge her electricity at him, she didn’t fight back, and it was clear she understood what was going on, and apparently was giving into the outcome. He didn’t let that sway his choice though, and even the thoughts of giving her some of his blood, healing and reviving her were brushed aside. Their fate had been sealed a long time ago, back when she had first brought that man into his apartment:
Someone had to get hurt in the end, and it wasn’t going to be him.
