How to Write a Villain

Written by: Wachey

First, I will admit that I don't write villains that often, but I understand that they are just as important as the heroes and can add a lot of action, suspense, humor or drama to a story. I've also attempted to use some of them in my fanfics like Lex Luthor in Birthday Surprises; Ra's Al Ghul ( Read more... )

Excellent essay, hon! I never really thought about all the categories of villains. :p But surprisingly, I've found some villains pretty easy to write - like Lex Luthor from Superman Returns. Which is a bit scary, b/c he's (in Aftermath, anyway) a murdering rapist with no qualms about destroying half of Metropolis and torturing Superman within an inch of his life. O_O

I'm sorry it took me so long to reply!! I was about to when I got distracted and then school stuff X3

Anyway, thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the essay. It was quite fun writing it. And yes, Lex can be a very sick puppy. I blame MR for me liking him though.

Great essay, definitely mem'd. I wonder, would the Flash's Rogues be in the Rival category? The majority start off as thieves, but as their interactions with the Flash grow they become villains to test the hero.

I wish there were a lot more books out there that has a villain as its main character. The old Catwoman was fun in this respect, and other than the Secret Six miniseries there's nothing currently. If Lex had a book to himself, I would definitely pick it up -- if only for the infinitely slashy rants :D

Sorry it took me so long to reply!! I feel so rude X3

I'm pretty sure most of Flash's Rogues would go into the thieves category, but as you've said, they probably do turn into rivals. victoria_wayne would probably know more about his villains than I do though.

Oh, same here!! Same here!!

Something I should add to this essay that I recently learned in my Writing for Animation class.

What makes a good villain is:

1) you're able to relate or empathize
2) logical
3) they have an edge over the hero

you're able to relate or empathize

I think that's why it's so tough for us Clexers, who saw a very human and appealing side to Lex for years before he lost his mind! ;)

Oh I know!! That and I blame MR for being so darn good looking.

*laughs*

That's true! MR threw the producers a curveball by being gorgeous and so talented, giving us shades of gray with Lex until he lost his mind! I'll keep saying that because it's true! He's crackers! The man we saw in the early seasons had the darkness we all had, but not the monster he's showing now.
