THE WORLD’S FINEST

(INTRODUCTION TO SUPERMAN/BATMAN)

By

Superman/Batman (Clark/Bruce) is arguably the most popular m/m slash pairing in DC Comics fandom. They are two of DC’s most popular heroes and enjoy a rich history together, which will help explain their appeal as a slash couple.

Ooooo very nice essay! And a topic that I adore!

Robin was usually on the covers with them, creating a nice, happy little family.

I love the adorable little family they made for themselves! It's such a nice dynamic: two awesome (but very different) superheroes and their little buddy. So precious! <3

There were symbolic wartime covers, too, one of the most famous showing the World’s Finest trio astride a destroyer’s big guns. Ahem. ;)

This is, by far, my favorite cover of all time. Everytime I see it, my mind breaks a little. It's glorious.

In 1954, someone at DC got the bright idea of teaming their two most famous heroes together, and the story involved Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne ending up as cabinmates on a cruise ship

I love that story (both versions, LOL), but I had no idea that that was their first ever meeting in the comics! Now I have to go re-read that! And whoever it was at DC who came up with that idea, that person is my hero.

Question: What other similarities and differences in their approach to crimefighting do you ( ... )

I always smile when I see those covers. :)

Oooh, I like some of your questions a lot!

Question: What other characters can fill the roles of Lois and Dick?

It definitely depends on the universe. Martian Manhunter is often a good confidant and ally (especially in the animated series), and Wonder Woman (because of her ties to both of them) often makes a very good comrade and sometimes matchmaker!

Question: What genres do you think suits them best? Which ones are your favorites to read and/or write?

Hurt/Comfort works SO well with these two, in part because there are such different kinds of hurt they can experience. Bruce can have all the painfully mundane human ills ranging from bad colds to serious injury, while Clark is prey to a lot of more esoteric scifi plot devices like the different kinds of Kryptonite, magic, red sunlight, and so on.

I'm really taken with action sequences with them too, although they can be hard to write to make sure both members are getting fair play! They've got such very different skill sets that it can be a challenge...

Thank you! It was fun coming up with them. :)

I like those choices! J'onn seems made for confidences, and Diana is part of the Trinity, so she understands these boys! :)

Oooh, this was a wonderful essay, Brady! (And thank you for reminding me about the Golden Age covers, LOL!!)

I will need to ponder on the questions a bit! :p But they've made me think, and that's good. :)

Thank you so much for writing this! :)
