OFFER Personal Scholarship for PoC to Attend ICFA #31

Nov 05, 2009 11:02

As you may know, (1) I have attended the International Conference on the Fantastic for over 25 years now, (2) the three of us go almost every year, and (3) this year the conference's theme is Race and the Fantastic, with GoHs Nalo Hopkinson, Laurence Yep, and Takayuki Tatsumi.

Our finances have been very good lately, so to do a bit of good in the world and for the ICFA, we would like to pay the way of a PoC who could not otherwise attend the conference. This is a one-time, personal scholarship that includes airfare (arranged ahead of time and cheap), membership, meals, and hotel (have to be willing to share with another attendee; the conference has a good system for that via the listserv).

The only qualifications are that you have an interest in race and fantastic literature including science-fiction and/or horror, identify and are known as someone who is not white, will be 21 or over in March, want to actively participate in conference activities/discussions, and cannot get money from a university to help you attend. You can be at a university with poor funding, be a grad or undergrad student or someone else who does not qualify for funding, or not be affiliated with a university. We will decide on our own criteria, including (but far from limited to) any writing you have done that we have seen and if we already know you personally; the decision is not subject to debate.

We're late for this, so we'll be deciding BY THURSDAY 11/12. If you qualify and want to be considered, e-mail to blb at-sign panix.com with age, name, academic affiliation if any, and a paragraph or two about why you want to go and are a good choice.

You may be able to still get in a paper proposal, although the official deadline is just past. (That's why this is in such a hurry.) Also, if you wish, you may be considered for a panel on "Race and the Monster," critically examining issues of outright race or allegories of race in texts such as the TV show True Blood, the movies Fido and District 9, and books of all sorts including the Gothics.

This is a personal gift from us, but we consider it a scholarship rather than a social invite.

Please pass this offer along, including to LJ groups where good candidates might see it. However, please either link or quote the entire entry.
