This morning, at about 4:45 or so, I woke up. The bed was shaking. The door to the bathroom was making strange noises, as the towell rack jittered against it. The building was producing a very low growl

I understand how that feels. There's certain motels that you rent by the hour or so, and you can put quarters in a console and the bed shakes, too...
