I took the back of a steak knife (with a plastic handle) and lightly tapped them. A couple of times I thought I had hit them too hard but they all turned out great.

Not to dye, but just to get the shells off, I've done it before too by smacking the side of the egg where the bubble is. Then you're not touching the actual membrane or the egg itself. :) Usually it's the fat end, I believe. Then you just use your fingers to gently squish it all around.
