I keep telling my friends, if you want to appreciate a given form of music (just for the sake of the music. Forget the lyrics), the first thing that needs to be done is to find what 'type' of music you are trying to appreciate. I say, there are only three different such forms ( Read more... )

jazz, music, pat metheny, interpretation, coltrane, improvisation

Music that you will think is boring / noise until you start understanding the nuances

Thrash Metal falls under this category. It's an amazing experience to discover the rhythm in early Metallica and Megadeth songs, for example.

Can you please recommend some good-to-begin-with Megadeth songs (that is not too much noise :) )? I used to like the S&M album of Metallica but, for unknown reasons, lost interest after a while.

S&M isn't very technical. You should try Metallica's "One" from "And Justice for All...". As for Megadeth, try listening to "Trust".

Depending on your current tolerance levels, you might have to forcefully listen to them several times before you find music in the noise.

Exactly. Lots of rules. Lot of free-form interpretation and improvisation.

Sometime I should buy that 'History of Jazz' book that I saw at Strands book stall -- a wonderful book with high quality photographs and depictions. Expensive though :(

I was in Type 2, and I guess thru that I later might have entered Type 3!

This Type-3 has kept me grounded, though I do listen to Type-2 at times! But I can't stand Type-1. It gives me head-ache...
It did.. I was feeling sleepy throughout during the farewell party of my batch because of loud Type-1 music!
But then, majority people in Type-1 think that Type-3 is boring and also, Type-3 thinks that Type-1 is boring/noise. While typing this, I realise that I have typed much about type and now I think that I should stop typing and post this typed comment!
