So far, Ikiru and Rashomon only. Now that I found 'national market' (where you get such wonderful films DVDs for Rs.100/- or so ;) ) I think its only a matter of time I get all the other films! :>

Exactly. What a movie!

It may very well be possible that they were cribbing about the limitations of the equipment they'd got, maybe? :) OTOH, seems like few pople these days do what Ansel Adams did those days with limited equipment and technology etc. I think all that goes to prove that the mind is the best equipment you can ever get.

Well Said! :) (of course, conditions apply to your statement, i guess ;). For example, I cannot go around trying to do 'wildlife' photography with my puny point-and-shoot camera even if I had some amazing 'mind' :P)

Welcome, my son. Welcome to Kurosawa Land. You must watch some Ray films or your life would be a waste.

Pather Panchali, I watched. More beautiful than Ikiru and Rashomon, i would rate. Probably because of the very 'touchy' story-line than a Rashomon or Ikiru.

I saw a couple of Ray films at Landmark's Bengali VCD section. Some other Ray films that you should watch out for are Mahanagar, Charulata, Sonar Kella, the other two Apu films, Agantuk among others. You get them easily in Calcutta, I got them there.

I guess he should watch a couple of Ritwik Ghatak movies too. For more than a single reason, I consider Ghatak better. Maybe he should also watch Bhuvan Shome by Mrinal Sen. I have seen four Kurosawa movies at a film festival retrospective. Where can I buy them in Bangalore?

I haven't seen Rashomon, but the plot is eerily similar to Virumaandi. I am a Kamal fan. So while it is likely that he "lifted" the story telling method, he could also be paying tribute, just as he did with the last scene of MMKR. What was that Chaplin movie by the way?

WOW, you are on LJ! Good to know! :) (btw, I tried pinging you from sunson_bigfun twice).

Yes, just today I was trying to figure out those 'inspired-by' kurosawa movies when my friend pointed out that 'A Bug\'s life' is actually nothing but 'Seven Samurai' in spirit. Never realized that Virumandi is actually Rashomon.

Which Chaplin movie are you talking about? I don't know. All the Chaplin movies that I watched were when I was very young when some periyappa recommended us to get chaplin and "laurel and hardy" "comedy movies" while we were renting out a "deck" to watch several cartoon movies. Then, I never liked them, probably because I never understood. :) Maybe I should get some chaplin movies too!

I just *have* an LJ account. I don't even use it, in fact, had forgotten the
username/password!

Like I said, I don't know the name of the Chaplin movie. But the last scene in Michael Madana Kama Rajan when the wood house sways on top of the hill was apparently in a Chaplin movie as well.
