Intha Veenaikku Theriyathu from the good ol' DD "Rayil Sneham" serial. Like every other Sahaana, this one too sounds similar and 'happy'. What a great thing to listen to for a quick mood change! Brings back so many good memories... Thanks, Neha! You made my day (for two days - Yesterday and today :D)!

The serial Rayil Sneham was the original 'Chinna Tirai' series by Balachandar. Hardly 13-15 episodes, it was brilliant executed. The song is set in Sahana, as the protagonist has a daughter and names her Sahana (her favourite raaga) and sings this song to the child.

The composition is by V.S.Narasimhan, and the song is sung by Chitra. There is an even more languid version by Yesudas, but I never managed to get hold of it. :) Another song from this TV serial, was the title song, called Mudalum illathathu, idu mudivum illathathu...

I think Balachander is obsessed with sahaana in general. Don't know why. His recent serial (on Jaya TV?) is also named 'Sahaana' and he keeps naming random characters in his serials as 'sahaana'. I mean, it is a good raga, agreed. But its the same all the time (unless you 'break the rules' and make something like 'Anbey Sugama' (A.R.Rahman, _Parthaley Paravasam_) (again! a balachander's movie!) (hah, like me... probably if I made a movie, i would ask the Music director to make all the songs in Kalyani or Thodi :D)

and what about that discussion between the Car Driver and the Gardener in 'Sindhu Bhairavi'? Isn't that also about Sahaana?

The serial Sahana was supposed to take off from the movie Sindhu Bhairavi. :) Hence the continuation I think

Sahana is a relatively untouched raaga. And I think Balachandar's fascination revolves around that fact. Sindhu Bhairavi dealt with music at various levels I think. The isolation experienced by musicians, especially true when their own spouses do not share their passion, but are devoted anyway. And of the internal and external conflicts experienced in Carnatic Music. And they all run parallel.

The extra-marital affair, the burden of a marital bond, the notion of 'virtuous women' (Sindhu's mother), the notion of virtue in Carnatic Music, the 'purity' required etc. Of particular interest was the drunkard. Janagaraaj, who played the Ghatam/ or Mridangam (shit..memory fails!) and his questions about alcohol, and what purity meant. And I like the fact that the name of the movie itself refers to two women: Sindhu and Bhairavi, who reflect the lifechoices that the singer is expected to make.

Wow, was googling for rayil sneham to get hold of the title song and you have it here!! I was never expecting to find it!:)

True, KB is obsessed with the name Sahaana... the raaga which he has a lot of obsession is Desh... the one of "thunbam naergayil yaazheduthu nee inbam saerkka maattaya"... what a song! KB's obsession with this raaga can be seen in a lot of movies, and also the TV serial Premi... where Rajesh Vaidhya plays the raaga in the veena for a whole episode...

The song discussion is Sindhu Bhairavi is _not_ about Sahana, its about the raagam Aarabi... "Aeri karaiyin mele poravale penn mayile", set in aarabi raagam...
