You can find some great CDs in the Bay Area. Some places where I bought excellent Carnatic CDs:

  • A music store next door to Komala Vilas on El Camino Real near Lawrence Expressway
  • Bharat Bazaar at the intersection of El Camino Real and Lawrence Expressway
  • Streetlight Records in San Franciso and Santa Cruz
  • Used bookstore on Castro street, Mountain View opposite East-West Bookstore

Trust me. You will have much better access to music than you will in India. The CDs are expensibe, though. I bought almost all my L. Shankar and L. Subramaniam there.

I hate thodi. I feel like reaching out and slapping the performer. God knows what the expected 'rasa' for thodi is.. but it is a depressing raga for me and makes me want to get up and leave from a concert...

I hate thodi.

Wow... I see... :) My teacher gave a beautiful demonstration. He first sang the swaras of Thodi without the Ghamakkams. It sounded *awful* and then with the Ghamakkams... it quickly became a nice 'trance'y thing. Thodi fits the bhakti part of Carnatic so well. Its so... crying.

OK, let me guess, you must like Sahana, then? (and I would even guess you don't like Bilahari for its 'too bright'? (I arrived at this 'guess' using some complex extra-polation ;) ))
