Summary: Set somewhere at the beginning of S1. Just a brief peek into Damon's thoughts on Caroline.
Snack
Damon chose Caroline because she’s everything Katherine is not - was is still too hard to come to terms with in the solitary prison of his mind - stupid, shallow, almost painfully young and naïve. So easy to manipulate it’s almost no fun at all, but a tasty enough trophy to keep around until her expiration date.
And yet, the first time he sees real emotion flash across her less than expressive eyes he is more than tempted to drain her completely just to be on the safe side - you don’t get to be over a century and a half without a stronger than average sense of self-preservation.
He ends up sparing her in the end and even admits (at least to himself) that it’s out of a ridiculously sentimental need to keep Elena from marring Katherine’s face with excruciating holier-than-thou expressions.
