Gordon Jackson in "A Town Like Alice" (1981)
Gordon Jackson plays a solicitor, Noel Strachan, in this mini-series. I have been searching for DVDs of this for years and finally found it, although it seems to be made from video tape; very disappointing. The whole story is very engrossing though and our Gordon plays a big part in it. From the beginning, when we see him called to an elderly man's house to make his Will, through to years later when he meets young Jean Paget, played by Helen Morse, who is the beneficiary of her Uncle's will. The middle part of the series goes back to WW11, and Jean is living in Malaya where the English lived the high life on rubber plantations. Then the Japanese invaded. The men were taken as POWs to work for them and the women and children were sent off to a non-existent women's compound, so they spent years walking from one place to another. In their wanders, Jean met with an Australian POW, Joe Harmon, played by Bryan Brown. The last part of the series is about Jean and Joe meeting again in Australia.
Anyway, this is Noel Strachan working his wiles on the old Uncle, who thought women couldn't inherit money until they were at least 40 years old. Noel talked round to making it 35 years, with Noel as the administrator to give the money to Jean when he decided.
Noel meets Jean after the War and is very taken with her.
