“Are you sure you don’t want it? It’s an antique. Been in the family for a long time, handed down for generations.”

We’re downsizing - or attempting to anyway. Through the years, we’ve collected a ton of shit. I say shit, because when you get right down to it, it really is. Useless stuff that takes up a lot of space and is just meant to look pretty ( Read more... )

It is a beautiful cradle.

I have trouble getting rid of things, but I don't have so many things that have been passed down through the generations. Just a small antique stove that has been passed down to the eldest daughter for a few generations.

Thank you. I used to have trouble getting rid of things, but then I had kids. They kind of do some of it for you. LOL! I wish they would take just one thing so it wouldn't have to just go away.

It is so hard to part with the antiques that have been a part of your life. There are so many memories in things. I hope you take the cradle -- it is extra-special with five generations of babies to grace it.

I think I've made up my mind to keep the cradle. Now I just have to convince my husband that we'll have room for it. :)

It's sad that they don't want more of it. If your children are young adults, though, they probably just don't appreciate the history behind it yet. I know I wasn't interested in our family history until I hit my 40s.

They range from mid-20's to 40. I wish we had more time to hold on to things because I have a feeling you might be right. They just haven't developed that interest and appreciation yet. Plus, we're a blended and adoptive family, so they get at least double the amount of ancestry coming at them.

That is pretty sweet. My parents went through downsizing a few years ago, over a period of a few years, actually, and they will sometimes still do it, occasionally. 54 years of marriage, 5 children, 10 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild... it all collects over time. I wish we could take all those lovely antique pieces, but we don't have the space right now, either. That is totally our taste, though... real wood, antique character... oldschool farmhouse style. Sad to have to let it all go.

There's a lot of sentimental attachment to pieces that we've received from the kids and grandkids as well, which adds to the difficulty.

This is such a particular kind of grief.

It definitely is. There's an attachment of guilt to it as well.
