Dee and the Admiral

I've been re-watching Season 3 of BSG, and one of the cut scenes for "Rapture" struck me as particularly interesting. It's an extended version of the scene where Dee is trying to rescue the morph-addled Starbuck, and Starbuck says, "I love Sam, I hate Sam. I love Lee, I hate Lee. I have to cheat just to keep the pieces all nice and neat." In the ( Read more... )

Hmmm... Mind if I add a bit of cynicism? Being deserving doesn't appear to matter much in intimate relationships, and keeping on moral high ground isn't endearing. Dee's extremely capable, intelligent and ethical, but she isn't very warm. She isn't as extroverted as Starbuck; and extroverts tend to win more affection than introverts, no matter what they do. Also, perhaps Adama recognizes Starbuck's need for fathering (because she's a frack-up); whereas Dee is more self-sufficient. He might admit to greater professional respect for Dee, and even a higher regard for her character, but Starbuck wins his affection by needing it more. Remember when he was crying while looking over Starbuck's disciplinary records? Flaws are more engaging than perfections. Not fair at all for those who work hard to do things right and keep out of petty drama, but who likes Paradiso?

No, I think that makes perfect sense. It's easy to forget Dee's there because she doesn't make trouble, doesn't act needy, and doesn't crack jokes for the audience. Her coworkers probably get a similar impression we do - she's there when you need her, and furniture otherwise. Sucks for Dee.

How are you? Is the semester almost over?

They still love Starbuck more and consider Dee expendable. Dee's still not part of the family. And Dee knows it.

Oooh... great observation and something I never thought of. I really enjoyed reading this!

(Hi, I just surfed into your journal reading STAR WARS meta and then read this.)
