Sixteen states and the District of Columbia, as well as 143 cities and counties, have laws prohibiting discrimination on the basis of gender identity or expression. The states in question are:

1) California (as of 2003)
2) Colorado (2007)

Sadly, that's actually better than I expected.Of course my expectations were dismal, so that's not saying much. (Minnesota 1993 is interesting given all the other, later dates. Also, CA as a state doesn't prohibit discrimination based on sex in public accomodations and education... at all? WTF? Or is it specifically sex-other-than-assigned-at-birth?)

I wish it were that uncontroversial here...

Here are California's Transgender Laws (as of 2008).

Two new laws were passed in October 2011: the Vital Statistics Modernization Act and the Gender Nondiscrimination Act (which applies to education, housing, business, etc.) That same day, the governor signed something called "Seth's Law," which is an anti-bullying law designed to protect LGBTQ kids.
