For whom will the bell toll?

If you've talked to me in the past two weeks, you know that I've been pretty gloomsday about potentially getting laid off. I assume Time Inc.'s dire straits are pretty common knowledge for those of us in the NYC media industry bubble, but for the rest, an explanation.

Yeah, job insecurity will make you lose sleep at night like nothing else. But you can definitely take comfort in the knowledge that it's gonna be just that much easier to get a job the next time around now that you have real world experience.

I think it's pretty demented that the editorial cuts (and the ad side cuts last year) were all in an effort not to stop losses but to preserve Time Inc.'s highest-in-the-industry profit margins. Dude, Time. I know that magazine publishing isn't the high-margin business that, say, making movies about Harry Potter is, but seriously, chill.

You're in my thoughts. And not just because we really want you to go to Beijing next year and spy on the Hamm bros for us.

Right? It's the total downside to working for The Man.

I can't even think about '08 right now. This is part of the reason why I never let myself believe the hype before. (But you know if it did somehow work out, I would totally be your personal correspondent!)
