My life is not going well at all, but I had a respite from my worries and depression tonight at a Classic Sci-Fi Movie Night that was donated to my UU church's service auction. They offered four Classic Sci-Fi Movie Nights in the fixed price section of the silent auction, each for a $10 donation: The Blob, Invasion from Mars, Them and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Tonight was
The Blob.
The C family really did it up big -- when we came in, their 11-year-old daughter was behind a card table in the lobby hawking refreshments. She had set it up like a real movie theater counter, with boxes of popcorn and traditional movie candy on display, and if you wanted one she got you one from a stack hidden on the side.
They had completely rearranged the family room with sofas and comfy chairs arranged in rows so it looked like a movie theater. They had a computer projector and a big screen, and in the dining room was an assortment of delectable homemade desserts -- truffles, chocolate cups with Grand Marnier filling, muffins filled with some kind of gooey chocolate and pecan filling, almond biscotti dipped in chocolate ... and those were just the ones I had! There was more!
The movie was great fun to watch with a bunch of people ready to laugh at it. I was too young when it first came out, and too old by the time it came around again, so somehow I never got around to seeing it before. What a big missing piece of pop culture! We had a ball laughing at the horrendous acting, the continuity errors, the ludicrous special effects, and all the things that make The Blob known as one of the worst movies ever made!
