Holy crap...

I was sitting here at my desk and all of a sudden I heard a ROAR from outside and the windows started rattling. I looked out and saw that the wind was blowing so hard that the trees were actually bending over nearly double. Ho...ly... SHIT. I have NEVER seen wind this strong. As I was looking out the window the power went off and came back on again ( Read more... )

It's like that down here, too. It broke our screen door.

I'm worried about my car because my parking space is right next to a tree. I'm not going out to move it tho :P

Yikes, that sounds scary :-\

I think your condo is considered a sturdy structure - definitely stay away from windows and doors, though. For further advice, here is the online version of the cyclone action guide I had on my fridge when I lived in Darwin ;-)

Yikes, did you ever experience a cyclone? Scary! :-O

It's definitely calmed down here now, although my dad, who lives about an hour northwest of me called a little while ago to tell me that the dangerous wind warning is in effect till tomorrow.. ugh. The storm front is traveling northwest to southeast, so they're getting the same conditions I am about half an hour before I do. My dad said they got another huge burst like the one I had and so I'd probably get another, but so far so good. I am keeping away from the windows but unfortunately for me the bed is right by a window, and so is the couch if I was going to sleep there instead, so hopefully there won't be too much wind overnight, lol.

Well, I've been reading slash to take my mind off of scary weather, and that definitely helps ;)

Luckily I never did, but they're a very real threat from about November to April in the northern parts of Australia. Cyclone Larry was the last big one I remember, but only because of the banana shortage it caused. It hit Queensland about 2 years ago and wiped out 90% of Australia's banana crop. The Sydney and Melbourne papers were, seriously, full of letters protesting the resulting high cost of bananas and calling on the government to lift the prohibition on banana imports (never mind the Queensland families whose livelihoods and homes were devastated...).

Glad to hear you're safe, and that you've had a "preview" of the coming weather from your dad. And slash-reading is always good, high winds or not! ;-)

I'm glad you never did either! Scary. They're not a big issue where I live either, although when I was in college a freak tornado touched down a couple towns away and did some damage to buildings, although there were no major injuries. No one saw it coming, and I didn't even know about it until it was over. That's the only one I've ever even heard of happening anywhere near me.

lol about the bananas. I have a new appreciation for the bananas I just bought this morning. They didn't set me back much ;)

And slash-reading is always good, high winds or not! ;-)

Unless it's Muppet slash. Gahhh, I can't get over that image!!! :-O *shudder*

Awww! *big hug* go away from the windows!!! If you're really scared, your bathroom should be very sturdy!
