Summary: Lee Hyukjae is a boy who could have a proper job if he only had finished his studies, he could have a family and a beautiful home, he could go abroad on holidays and he could have made his parents proud of himself. But lif didn't o that way. Now he’s a drug dealer that lives in danger. No one knows him and he lives alone and without a single friend. Until he his old school mate.
Finally, after a long time of searching for a person who would still remember the Skyers, they found her. She came from a small village, far away from the origins of the Earthers. She lived with her grandmother who still believed in the old stories. The old stories that were once true and were then forgotten, abandoned.
Her husband, a man with no smile, heard about the Skyer visiting their village and was not happy about this. He found his fiancé with this stranger from their home. He was terrified. He couldn’t understand what the man was saying. He didn’t believe his eyes as he saw his wings. He didn’t know what to do or how to act and thus he made a wrong choice.
I woke up to someone knocking on my door. I took a quick look at the clock - telling me it was four in the morning. The knocking continued and I knew it wouldn’t end before I opened the door.
I must say, I was pretty amazed to see him. “Ryeowook?”
“Hi Hyukkie.” Said the small man with high cheekbones, dark eyes and sharp chin. “Mind to let me in?”
Of course I let him in. He was wet from top to heel. I offered him some dry, clean clothes and let him use the shower. Meanwhile I boiled some water and made us tea. I had guessed the clothes were too big for him and he’d drown in them but no can do. He looked quite cute actually.
“I’m sorry I came here like this, in the middle of the night.” He said while drying his hair into the towel. “But I need you. I need to find Donghae and I believe you know more about him than I do.”
“Well, it’s not so hard to find him. He actually found me a couple weeks ago.” I said. “Why do you need to see him so bad?”
He didn’t answer. Was like didn’t hear me at all. He sat down on the chair opposite to me and took the tea cup into his hands.
“I don’t know what he’s told you and I don’t want to tell you things I’m not supposed to.” He said quietly. “Right now I just must find him.”
It was a Friday morning. I made Ryeowook a bed on the couch where he could sleep a few more hours before we’d be able to go and find Donghae. I couldn’t sleep. My mind was like a roller coaster, all the time thinking the reason for the question why Ryeowook wanted to find Donghae so bad.
But then another question arose in my mind. How on Earth did he find me?
I was supposed to be impossible to find. I had paid much enough to make sure no one would be able to find me.
I had to ask Ryeowook about that but first I wanted to sleep a little more. I woke up to the smell of food. It flowed into the room from under the closed door. And it smelled really good! My stomach also informed about its hunger. It had been a while since I ate properly.
I went into the kitchen, rubbing the last bits of sleep from my eyes.
“You’re still the world’s greatest sleeper.” Ryeowook said and laughed a little. “Here, I made some food. It looks like you haven’t eaten anything in a week.” He said and place a plate full of food in front of me on the table. “…or a month.”
Ryeowook never told me how he found me or why he wanted to find Donghae so bad. In the evening we went to the bar. We watched Donghae’s show but I knew there was something wrong now. Something changed in Donghae’s expression as he saw both of us sitting in the audience. He didn’t want to show it but I saw it, he couldn’t hide it from me.
“No Ryeowook!” I heard Donghae yelling. We had agreed to go to my apartment since it was the nearest place where no one would eavesdrop the conversations we - or more like they - had.
“But Donghae! You know you can’t -“
“Wook! He doesn’t know a frigging thing about it!” Donghae screamed and came from my bedroom, slamming the door shut right behind him.
“DONGHAE!” Ryeowook yelled and came right after him. Donghae was already putting on his coat and pulling his shows on with a hurry. He was clearly pissed off, in fact he was furious.
“Umm, what’s going on here?” I asked. Both of my childhood friends stopped their arguing at the same time.
“NOTHING!” They both yelled. I put my hands up above my head and walked back to the kitchen where I had been sitting and waiting for them.
“…Wook, we cannot tell him. Do you realize what it would be like for him?” I heard Donghae asking, this time with a lower voice. I guess I wasn’t supposed to hear it.
“No, Donghae! Could you understand that he’s going to find it out sooner or later?”
“I’m going now, Wook. Bye Hyukkie! See you around!” And then I heard the door closing.
I got up and walked to the kitchen. Ryeowook was brushing his fingers through his hair. He was clearly frustrated. Whatever that fight was about, it wasn’t something light.
“Everything OK?” I asked. Ryeowook only sighed heavily and shook his head as he passed me. He dropped himself onto the couch. “Can I ask you what all that was about?”
“No you can’t.” I decided it was worthless to try and get an answer so I let the subject be. Ryeowook, however, didn’t seem to relax at all. He was sighing, rubbing his face or pulling his fingers through his hair and just staring at the TV without seeing anything.
It was late already and I was about to go to bed when Ryeowook’s phone rang. I was already in my room, taking off my shirt, so I couldn’t hear what he said but after only a couple of seconds he was pulling his shoes on and grabbed his jacket from the hook.
“Where’re you going!?” I yelled but he had already disappeared into the staircase. I could hear him jumping down the stairs and running so fast he apparently hit the lady living next to me - I heard her screaming and cursing.
I pulled on the shirt that I had just taken off and ran after him. I was pulling on my jacket when I was already outside. It was raining like someone would have poured the water from a bucket. I was soaked wet in a few second. I ran to the street and saw Ryeowook. I tried to catch him but he was way ahead already.
“And…GO!” The teacher yelled and the boys took off. It was a nameless competition but no one wanted to be the last one coming to the goal. Hyukjae took the lead easily at the start. He had always enjoyed running and had practiced it for ages.
The goal line was already in his eyes. He had kept the lead position, no one had tried to challenge his speed - yet. There were only a couple hundred meters left when he saw a short boy trying to get past him. He recognized the boy quickly. It became the competition of the two of them. And Ryeowook wasn’t aiming to the silver. He wanted to win as bad as did Hyukjae.
Ryeowook won. Both of the boys fell on the grass, sweating and smiling. There were no mean looks aimed at the other but only wide smiles. It was only a fun competition with no real winners or losers.
I lost him. I lost him when he turned around the corner to another street. I didn’t know where I was or for how long had I run. All I knew was I was soaked wet and it was frigging cold! I had to go home before I got sick. I turned around and started jogging back home - hoping I’d still find it.
But then I saw him. He was in an alley, grouched down with his back to me.
“Ryeowook!” I took the few steps it needed for me to get to him.
“Don’t come here Hyukkie.” I heard Donghae’s voice saying. He was behind Ryeowook who turned his head as he heard his name being spoken.
“Everything OK?” I asked. Ryeowook turned his head back to Donghae. I know they spoke about something but I couldn’t hear them whispering. I walked closer to them as no one told me not to anymore. I admit I was curious as hell. I had always been a curious boy and that’s why I was often in a trouble.
It was dark in the alley but even then I could see it. Something silvery on the ground right behind Donghae.
“What the-“ It slipped out of my mouth. Both of them turned their heads to me. They had identical expressions in their faces and they both looked horrified.
I frigging saw it. I promise and swear I saw it!
And they knew I saw it.
The tail was long and it had a silvery color. I couldn’t see the color properly in the dark but I knew already it was the same color as the tail Donghae had when he was working at the bar.
“Wook, help me upstairs.” Donghae said. He sounded horribly calm. Ryeowook turned to look at Donghae. “Don’t start arguing now. You’re both freezing here.”
Ryeowook took a better hold of Donghae whose upper body was already in his lap. He put his arms around Donghae’s body and tried to stand up but his small frame wasn’t strong enough.
“Let me help.” I said and took Ryeowook’s place. He went to take a hold on Donghae’s tail. Donghae gave me the keys from the pocket of his jacket. Thank god he lived on the second floor - we couldn’t have been able to carry him any further. He weighted a lot more than one would think.
We got him to the living room. Ryeowook seemed to know the apartment already as he disappeared into the bathroom and came back with ten towels or so. He spread them all over Donghae and he started rubbing himself with them. Wait… He is…
A merman. A merman.
I think I passed out. At least I don’t remember myself walking to the couch and falling on it. Ryeowook was sitting on the floor before me looking worried. He offered me a glass of water as he noticed me waking up.
“Here, you need to drink. You’re paler as a blank paper.”
“And then we need to get you into dry clothes.” I heard Donghae yelling over a hairdryer in the bathroom. After a while he turned off the hairdryer. By the time I had already gathered myself back into one and had taken off my jacket and pants.
“Ryeowook! Did you take all of the towels?”
Ryeowook was about to burst into laughter, I could see it on his face. “I might have…!” Donghae cursed and that was when Ryeowook lost his self-control. He laughed out loud and Donghae started laughing also. I just stared at the small man in the living room and then at the other man at the door of the bathroom.
“Okay, turn around both of you.” Donghae said as he recovered.
“Come on, we’re all men.” Ryeowook answered and winked at me. “You must see him naked, it’s worth seeing.” He whispered at me. I have never seen him like that. He has never been that…naughty! “Okay, we’ll turn around!” Ryeowook told Donghae, who came out of the bathroom right after hearing it.
Ryeowook poked me with his elbow like he was trying to get me to turn around. I had obeyed Donghae’s request and turned my back at him.
“Thank you Hyukjae. Ryeowook, I’m disappointed.” Donghae said playfully. I turned around and saw him standing there with his hand covering his crotch. Damn he was gorgeous. “I knew you wouldn’t be able to resist.” Donghae said as he saw me taking a peak.
And damn that smirk he had on his face as he spoke.
We were sitting in the living room with cups of tea. No one said anything and I didn’t dare to break the silence. Ryeowook was playing with his phone and Donghae was staring at me, which was incredibly disturbing.
“Donghae, I think we should tell him.” Ryeowook muttered but didn’t stop playing. Donghae’s eyes moved from me to him with an expression impossible to read.
“Didn’t you just say we can’t tell him yet?” Donghae said. I changed the target of my eyes from Donghae to Ryeowook and back. There was a moment of silence.
“I don’t see what’s there to explain… I saw you with a tail in the middle of the alley.” I said, trying to smooth the mood.
“And you say there’s nothing to explain?” Ryeowook stated bluntly. This time he took his eyes off the phone and looked at me. “You find it completely normal to see a man with a tail?”
“Umm… no, but I mean-“
“You know the old story about the three different populations living in the seas, on Earth and in the sky.” Donghae started. Everyone should know that story. My grandma had told me and my sister that for thousand times and we knew it by heart.
“The merman, mermaids and angels are all true creatures. Donghae is part of the population living in water. I’m supposed to be above you both at the moment; I shouldn’t be here at all. But thanks to Donghae and his father I’m stuck in here.” Ryeowook said.
“Is that really what you want to tell him?!” Donghae got furious in a mare second. “Tell him how my father failed in his mission and thus was forced to go to the surface?!”
“Calm down.” Ryeowook told him. Donghae sat down on the couch where he had been sitting next to me before he had jumped up. “Sorry to bring it up but you know how I hate being here. I just don’t belong here.”
“Can’t you just skip whatever it is and get to the point?” I asked. It felt so useless, the whole conversation.
“I’m going to get a glass of water.” Ryeowook said and disappeared into the kitchen. Donghae showed him a finger even though Ryeowook didn’t see it.
“I hate it when he’s like that. Usually he’s the smiling geek that he used to be.” Donghae said. “But I really need to tell you that what you saw was true. Is true. I do have a tail.” He paused for a moment.
“I kind of realized that already.” I said and tried to smile at him. His face stayed serious.
“Also the story about the people in the seas and another population living above the clouds is true.” Another pause. This time I needed it. So if the whole story is true, then there really are Angels - although they aren’t apparently dead people protecting all of us - and there really might be a king Triton - like from the Little Mermaid - living under the seas.
“Donghae, take off your pants.” Said Ryeowook suddenly. He was standing right behind the couch where we were sitting. Donghae was about to open up his mouth but Ryeowook got there first. “Up and strip!” It was like an order but it sounded too playful to be taken seriously.
And then he threw the water from his glass on Donghae.
I could only stare at Donghae. His pants got ripped off and in mare seconds the tail was there again and Donghae himself had fallen on the floor. He cursed as hell but all me and Ryeowook did was laughing. He was so pissed off that he actually smacked me in the face with his tail. Only then did I stop laughing.
“Okay Wook. You got me, ha ha.” Donghae rolled his eyes. “Take off your shirt and step on the kitchen chair.”
“Oh no, not gonna happen.” Ryeowook said and suddenly his smile was gone.
“Hyuk bring here the chair and lift him on it.” Donghae ordered. I did as I was told - I had a hunch that I’d get to laugh even more soon. I brought the chair right next to Donghae and then lifted the struggling Ryeowook on it. Donghae did the rest.
With his tail, Donghae threw the chair out of balance. The chair fell down and so did Ryeowook, only he didn’t hit the floor. It happened so fast I couldn’t really see them appearing but then I saw Ryeowook standing there, without his shirt but with big and beautiful and glowing white wings showing from behind his back.
“Holy shit!” What could I say. There was a merman and an angel in the same room with me! They had just shown me that my two childhood friends were characters from a bedtime story!
“Isn’t it great?” Donghae laughed. It was funny how it seemed like they had changed their roles. Now it was Ryeowook looking pissed off and Donghae rolling on the floor and laughing.
It took me a while to gather my thoughts and form the questions I wanted to ask. I sat back on the couch while Ryeowook chose to pick up the chair and sit on it and Donghae just laid on the floor, playing with his tail and a small ball he had found from the floor.
“I guess your tail disappears when you get dry, right?” I asked from Donghae. He nodded but didn’t say anything. “But then, how do you get rid of your wings?” I asked from Ryeowook.
“I should fly and then come back down on the ground. And as you saw, when Donghae gets wet his tail comes out - my wings come out when I fall and I need to fly. We can’t help them appearing if those things happen.” With the last sentence he meant his wings and Donghae’s tail of course. He also gave Donghae a nasty look as he spoke.
“Why are you here?” That question wasn’t on the list of the questions I wanted to ask but it came out of my mouth without me even realizing it. They looked at each other for a moment before Donghae started talking.
“It’s not what you think. We’re not here for the same mission as the Skyer and Seaser of the story. This is because of my father and I hope you don’t change your opinions about me or my people after I tell you this.”
“That’s quite hard not to change his opinions about you since he just saw what you really are.” Ryeowook pointed out.
“Anyway, the culture of my people is quite strict. No exceptions are allowed. And my father made one. He broke a rule that is one of the most important in our culture. He cheated my mother with a human and then took me with him above the surface.”
“So you’re not here of your own will?”
“Nope. I was very small and young at the time we came here. We lived with this woman my father was dating but that didn’t last long. You know I disappeared from school before graduating. That woman was a witch. She was so evil that I will never say her name out loud.
She told one man about what we really are. They came there in the middle of the night. She let them in and showed them our rooms where we were sleeping peacefully. They threw water on us, just to make sure they weren’t fooled.
And because of what they saw they took us. I’m not sure what happened to my father. I think he got killed and his body and tail were sold in the black markets. But I was kept in a cellar of a house I don’t know and then I was sold to the owner of the bar where I’m still working. He’s a good man, even though you might not believe it.”
Donghae stopped his little story. Ryeowook was looking at him with his mouth open.
“You say he’s a good man!? He BOUGHT you!” He said.
“He’s the one paying the rent of this apartment and he buys me the food and pays the bills!” Donghae spat back at him.
I woke up in the afternoon. I had fallen asleep on the couch of Donghae’s apartment at some point. Donghae was sitting on an arm chair, reading a paper.
“You haven’t changed a bit.” Donghae said as I sat up and stretched my arms. “Still sleeping like a little a baby.”
I shoved out my tongue at him before standing up. Ryeowook was taking over the toilet and it took way too long for him to get out - no one knows what he was doing there. When he finally got out and let me to the shower he was looking oddly at me.
I let the water run for a while until it was warm enough and stepped under the steam. I went through everything that happened last night. My two friends had just found me even though I was supposed to be impossible to find. And then they appear to be some creatures from a children’s story. And I was just a pathetic drug dealer.
“Someday you will find your path. You may not like it but there’s no choice for you but to follow it.” An old lady told a young boy sitting on her lap.
“But Grandma, what if I don’t want to follow it? What if I want to find my own way?”
“You’re a wise boy. But you must learn that your path choses you, you don’t choose the path.” She said before letting the boy jump off his lap. She then got up and went to the stove where the tea was in a pot. She took two Chinese cups that she had gotten from her husband while they had still been young and poured tea into both of them.
“Have you ever wanted to change your path, grandma?” The boy asked as he took the cup into his hands.
“I think I wouldn’t be here with you, Hyukjae, if I had wanted to.” Grandma said with a warm smile on her face. Hyukjae stayed quiet for the rest of the time and just thought about the future. His grandma was looking out of the window like she was dreaming of the old times.
“…just let me talk to him. I don’t want to leave him alone after all that has happened.”
“No Donghae. You can’t hang around with him anymore. You know what we should do.” Ryeowook answered.
I stepped out of the bathroom and shut the door so that they would really hear it.
“I’m tired of hearing you two whispering something when I’m not around.” I said aloud. “Can’t you just tell me? You know, I’m not going to tell things forward.”
