Whew! That must have been frightening as hell. Glad all is well (though now I'm wondering what "true" and "plumb" mean)

As I understand it, "true" generally means "straight, not bent", and "plumb" more or less just means "vertical, not leaning".

yep. the top of the wall was about a foot away from the bottom of the wall, in terms of where they lined up with the ground. now, of course, there's just a big hole there.

a plumb bob is essentially a small heavy object on a long string. you hang the string off the top of your project and see where the small object lines up, which can tell you if your project is straight up and down (plumb), or leaning.

i often frame that as "slow and steady wins the race" -- ie, taking time to do the job right does mean a slower job in the immediate moment, but it also can mean not having to redo it later.

mind you, i'm terribly hasty sometimes, so this is as much a reminder to myself as anything.
