Quickie question- I want as many responses as possible:

Your opinion- What effect, if any, will Saddam's death sentence (by hanging of all things!) have on Tuesday's election?

Ready, GO.

well...i'm really not sure. but i fear it means another leg up for the right... or at least the neo-right

PS - if i ever have a death sentence passed on me (god forbid), i want to go by hanging, ritual suicide, or dying in a duel to the death. with swords.

Although a few of Bush's administrators might try and push it as a 'victory' in the War on Terror, it'd only highlight the growing anger against the Republican party of their handling of the Iraq war; even those who support toppling Hussein will find the resulting chaos a little hard to stomach.

I'm interested to see what the response of the article in the Army Times, Navy Times, Air Force Times, and the Marine Times calling for Rumsfeld to be removed by Bush will be. I don't think I've ever heard of military-run publications turning against the President like that.

... pessimist =P

That story is interesting, however these are mostly the opinions of retired generals- not the ones currently in command. You also have to take that into account, although I do find it disturbing that so many former military are against Rumsfeld.

Most of the retired generals are generals who have left service since the start of the Iraq War. Also, General Abizaid, who regularly testifies in front of Congress about the need for more troops to complete the mission and his fears that the war will degenerate into sectarian violence (and is quoted in the article) is the current Commander-in-Chief of the forces in Iraq. And the Army Times is not retired.

And I'm only a pessimist when I read the news. :-P

I would say a man being hanged on the opposite side of the globe will have no effect on people putting holes in a piece of paper on Tuesday.

maybe if he were any old man, but don't you think the Bush administration will try to tout this as a victory for America? "A brutal dictator brought to justice by the people of Iraq"

Republicans will see some increased support.

Hell, I think it's pretty awesome we're going to hang him.

I agree.

hanging is a pretty awesome way to go- especially because it can be made public, so his own people can watch and rejoice while he squirms and dies. :)
