Set up a friends groups for friends and one for relatives and then limit access to tagged photos, status updates, wall posts selectively. Although this is one of the reasons I'm not on FB anymore: You don't know who is reading.
Yup, recently I posted a link I thought was interesting which led to my brother trying to start a horrible flame was telling me all gays will burn in hell. I just deleted the entire thread, but have been much more cautious since. But I keep in touch with a lot of people there, from all around the world - and besides which, the games are great procrastination tools :)
I know what you mean about 'information leakage', and some of the apps certainly make it too easy to tell all your contacts various weird things, or worse, send them all something fairly bizarre - to say nothing of status updates - or worse, other peoples!
That's why I've got two - http://facebook.com/topbit and my other one, although the other has far fewer contacts anyway. (most of my friends are 'interesting' :-) )
I've been using FaceBook as a way to come out to my extended family. I reckon if the ask to friend me then they should be able to cope with me talking about bi stuff. But i don't post anything excplicit or about Kinkyness or Paganism
I think FB is a good way to keep in touch with lots of people and to make general observations about my life (most of which only makes sense to some of the people some of the time). I only friend relatives who are at least as badly behaved as me, and then I don't go into details that may reach others. I would say remove any relatives or friends off your FB who cause you grief, make a separate account for keeping them up to date on more mundane stuff like your new job, and keep the other FB for the friends who are ok with you: being in pride photos , belonging to unusual interest groups and participating in how bi are you apps, but may not neccesarily associate them with you as sunflower the real person and keep LJ for respectful, intelligent friends in the know...sorted!
