So glad to see you ranting about this baby.

Very much agreed with the point you make about both makers being talented. There are such potential ideas (I say YES to delicious tragic love) and they were even smart enough to abolish the icky chibis. Also, the piece of dialogue you picked up really is gorgeous.

I just can't imagine how they thought they'd get away with the four year gap... Though yeah, I suppose the editor told them they only have so many pages left and they'd planned all these awesome characters (as the protectors obviously have behind-the-scene backstories) and they just really couldn't not include some hints about them even when the poor things ended up having absolutely nothing to do.

It actually does work for Lapizuli a bit like Pokemon (the games at least) works for the player. At first every single new catch is awesome and cool and then after a while you just have so many you can't come up with anything to do with them except give them funny names...

I'm actually pretty sad about that four year gap - despite everything I would have liked to read the whole story. I just try to imagine their editor was a inhumane tyrant and that it wasn't their fault... ;D

Oh god, yes, that was what happened to me with the Pokémon games all the time. I think I actually used, like, six pokémon...

It took me a few chapters to realize that Panther was Lapis' mentor after which I started wondering what kind of mentor he was. Result: the kind that has to be forcibly dragged away from saving the hero from his enemies. Seriously. I think he starts believing Lapis might be able to save the world on his own three pages before he dies or such. There's even a scene where Lapis sneaks away from their camp in order to be able to save people without Panther butting in to help him. Panther is basically the opposite of the mentor type you described in your post. ^^
