Sakura’s face was scrunched into the vision of utmost concentration. The grip she held on the brush was so tight that her knuckles had begun to turn white, and as she lowered the tip of the brush to the page, a loud cough disturbed her concentration and her hand slipped. Looking down, Sakura saw that her perfect work now had a large, inky blotch. Groaning in frustration, Sakura threw down the brush.

“Genma! I told you to be quiet.”

“Sorry,” he called out sheepishly from behind, raising a hand in mock salute. Sakura could only sigh as she swivelled around on her chair to face him. Genma looked up from his book with a questioning stare. “Giving up already?”

Sakura shrugged. “I guess it’s not really my thing. Can’t say I didn’t try,” reaching behind her, Sakura grabbed the large stack of papers that littered her desk. “There’s got to be at least a hundred failed attempts here.” At Genma’s outstretched hand, Sakura handed him the unorganized stack, catching a wayward one as it disentangled itself from the group. At first, Genma kept a straight face as he rifled through the pages, studying her latest attempts at a new hobby. But the more he looked at, the more it became evident to Sakura that it was becoming impossible for him to keep a straight face. Before he had perused even half the stack, Genma burst out into a fit of laughter.

“This was your best attempt?”

Sakura pouted, snatching back some of the pages. “What? It’s not like you could do better.”

“Want to bet on that?”

There was a challenge in his voice, and a challenge was something Sakura could never refuse, even after all these years. “Fine. Don’t be sorry when you lose, though.”

“What are you willing to bet, Haruno?”

Sakura thought about it for a moment; in their current life, there was nothing she could give that they didn’t already have. Finally, she said, “For 24 hours, I’ll do anything you ask.”

Genma smirked. “You already do that anyways, Haruno. But I’ll take that bet, and I’ll match your wager.”

Sakura resisted the urge to stick out her tongue childishly at him. “You do that already too, Shiranui.”

Genma snapped his book shut and placed it on the small coffee table between them. When he reached Sakura’s side, he nudged her out of the seat, and with only a small pout of protest, she yielded her spot to him.

To her horror, Genma started preparing the ink, brushes and paper like an old pro. Sakura could only watch, still mute, as he placed the brush, so delicately held, on the page and began to write. The words that flowed out from under his brush were delicate and beautiful, as if written by a master of times lost to them. Each stroke held a deliberateness that Sakura had tried to emulate in her own failed attempts. In short, his work was nothing short of beautiful. When he finished writing the four word yojijukugo, Sakura squinted down at the beautiful kanji in an attempt to decipher its meaning. After a moment, Sakura gasped, and slapped him hard across the arm.

“You bastard! Temaemiso? I should’ve known you’d trick me.”

In response, Genma only laughed. “You didn’t ask if I’d ever learned calligraphy. You just assumed I didn’t know how to.”

“Well you never told me you knew how to do something like this.”

“Darling, you never asked.”

Sakura sighed, as there was no denying the truth to his logic. “But did you have to write something so absolutely narcissistic? It’s so like you to rub salt in a wound.”

Genma shrugged, “What can you do? It’s only right to show off what you have-” Genma frowned at her as she snatched the page up and away from him. “Hey, hey, easy there. It’s a crime to ruin a masterpiece-” He stopped his protests when he saw the smile on her face.

“Let’s frame it and hang this up over here,” Sakura said, anger seemingly forgotten as she held up the long page against their empty wall. Sakura didn’t wait for a response from him as she continued to move it around in her attempt to determine the perfect spot. Taking advantage of her preoccupation, Genma approached from behind and wrapped his arms around her waist. She turned around in surprise, a guileless expression coating her features.

“We can do that…later,” Genma whispered into her ears, voice all husky. “But for the next twenty-four hours, you’re mine.”

Sakura grinned, capturing his lips on hers. “For the next twenty-four, and another twenty-four years after that, I’m all yours.”

Genma wasn’t inclined to disagree as he moved them backwards, crushing her slim body between him and the wall. That was all the invitation she needed as she wrapped her legs around his middle. Their eager lips and impatient hands saw them each breathing heavily, and as Genma proceeded to carry her to the canopy bed they shared, his eyes caught the slip of paper that started it all, and a devious smirk spread across his face.

Oh, the things his innocent girl fell for.

yojijukugo is a Japanese lexeme, or “four-character idiomatic phrase.” Temaemiso is a specific phrase that means to sing one’s own praise or to toot one’s own horn (taken straight from the most trusty source around, good ol' Wikipeda)
