Forever is such a fleeting word that they have to stop and wonder if it holds any meaning at all anymore, if it ever did.

She had said once, in a smiling promise that forever is what they have, will always have. They had believed - what was there to not believe? An angelic smile, christened with the genius love of a girl who shied away from the scent of deceit. She had taught them, from basics to thirty-feet deep, the things that they had not understood. Enjoying ice-cream on a Sunday off, revelling in the warmth and bliss of a lover’s embrace; it had all been there, and it had been perfect.

Lazy Sunday mornings spent in bed, a pile of tangled limbs in heated, sweaty ecstasy - it was now all a simple memory of what had promised so much. Now, there is nothing left but the broken mess of what she has left behind; a triangle lopsided, a tricycle missing a wheel, the three musketeers short one. All of these allusions they mentally ascribe to themselves fix so adequately that they are perfectly inadequate. How can they ever label what once was, especially in its wake?

No words are exchanged between the two left behind as they trod silently out of the apartment. Everything is hollow now. Where the echoes of her laughter once were, only the shadows of her presence remain now - it is nearly asphyxiating, the intangible toxins of her departure. But even in her passing, she has left them with enough to survive by. Somehow, in her magical weaving and subtle unity, she has ensured that should this day come, alone is something they will never again have to face.

It is not nearly enough, not nearly as intoxicating as her charming presence, but it is enough. It is her last token of love for them, and for that, they cherish it.

As they pad towards her well-visited gravesite, their fingers are loosely entwined. The pang of heartache for the absent, smaller hand stabs through them like a thousand needles to the heart, but they cope and unconsciously, their fingers knit tighter together.

Acceptance may not come easy, but one day, some day, they will be able to smile upon her memory.
