I don't think soccer will ever threaten footy here, it's just not exciting enough.

But I disagree!

Then again, I do get my heart broken every single weekend.

if you followed football you would never think that.
most australians are just scared of playing/following a sport that we're not one of the best in the world at.

I do follow football, I've been going to games since I was like 2 hey. Since when is another country better at it than us anyway?

I think super 14 will diminish AFL's popularity before soccer will. With commerical expenditure on advertising, sponsorship and promotion continually increasing in super 14 young men playing sport in their high schools will consistently choose rugby over AFL for the dollar signs and the international exposure. of course this phenomenon wont be evident for another 20 years.

wow you are sounding 100% like my dad. he has been saying that for ages and i keep saying he is crazy to think that soccer can ever become even remotely close to being as popular as footy here. Most of the guys that i know don't mind watching it but also consider it to be a 'faggot' sport made for 'pussy's' etc.. perhaps this attitude will change next generation.

speaking of cultural advancement: soccer may help pseudo homosexual football players feel more free and welcome to come out of the closet. it may also help suppress narrow minded footballers like sherry mentioned, or influence them to change their poorly conceived opinions about soccer.
i think that soccer can threaten the popularity of other codes but will stop short of taking over AFL.

soccer will continue to grow in australia, that is in my opinion inevitable. but i think the fact that football is 'our' sport plays a large part in its popularity, whether consciously or not.

re: 'cultural advancement' - i'm surprised noone has shot your shit down in flames for saying that. i can't be assed taking the anthropological angle.

yogo for the world cup win.

Sweet. I offer an apology to all the Brazilians who read my journal on a weekly basis, who have recently fallen in love with my hard hitting and inspired cultural analysis.
