I'm pretty sure that the black-eyed peas is a tradition in the US South. My family cooks a pot full every new year, but honestly, I don't know many people that do it. Maybe a tradition restricted to the middle-class as well?

Every I know who does black-eyed peas is from the south (but I live in Tennessee & mostly know people from the south, so that's not saying very much).

I don't know that many people who do it, but those I do always seem shocked that my family doesn't.

No one I asked knew, even the people who've always followed the tradition, so I finally googled it.

Wikipedia says: The peas, since they swell when cooked, symbolize prosperity.
