I really enjoyed seeing Merope's craft in this piece - her garden and potion, and also the simple plan that has taken her so long to be able to even consider. Beautiful writing, and I loved the imagery, particularly of the auras, and the possibly-flattering snake.

Thank you so much! I had a lot of fun coming up with details like the auras for this story-I'm glad they worked for you! :-)

Aw, I liked this. Simple and good. I like how natural it is that she can talk to snakes, and the creativeness of the two potions that let her see auras...very cool. Am memorying.

Thank you-I'm so happy you liked it! I think the conversation with the snake might have been the part that was the most fun to write, so I'm glad you enjoyed it. :-)

I really enjoyed this. The conversation with the snake and the aura potion were nice touches. A very insightful look at Merope's character. Lovely.

That's really lovely! I love the richness of her enhanced perceptions, how well she knows her tiny little plot of earth, and how little she knows of anything outside it. It foreshadows how lost she felt when she finally got out in the world, and couldn't find Tom's light after all. Really well done.

Thank you so much! I definitely took a lot of liberties with what things might have been like for her (i.e., I made a lot of stuff up *g*), and I had a lot of fun doing it-so I'm always happy when people feel it worked. :-)

Wow, what an evocative piece of writing. The snake makes a perfect interlocutor. Of course she would be a parseltongue like the other Gaunts, and it gives a wonderful Edenic tone: the woman in the garden with the snake, just poised to go out into the big world.

And as I posted in a comment above, it had a special resonance for me because I just recently posted a Merope drabble of my own for the Strawberry Fields challenge at omniocular. It focuses on the same period in Merope's life as the fic here. Inspired by the Beatles' song, it's called She's Leaving Home.

Thank you so much! I had *so* much fun writing her conversation with the snake; it's kind of what made the whole story come together for me. I'm really glad it worked for you!

And thanks for letting me know about your drabble! I'll definitely check it out. :-)
