The Slayer goes by many names. The Chosen One, the One Girl in All the World, Goldilocks… The names are as varied as the young lady’s wardrobe. But Rupert knows her as very few others do. Rupert knows her as Buffy.
At first, of course, Rupert would never have dreamed of being so forward-of actually calling his mistress anything other than Miss Summers, or perhaps Madam. But time, as it is wont to do, changes things. And between shared tears and laughter, sorrow and joy, Rupert has grown to feel toward Buffy as more than a servant toward his master. He feels, almost, as a father toward a daughter.
There are drawbacks due to this closeness. It causes him pain when she is injured. It causes him worry when she is missing. But there are so many rewards as well. He feels pride as he has never felt before.
It’s not that he never lends a helping hand. Although he generally is not in the fray, he has certainly played his part in stopping the villains and saving the day. Between crazy cousin hijinks and masquerade ball shenanigans, he’s been a part of protecting Sunnydale from those who would do her harm. But at the end of the day, his true task is maintaining stately Summers Manor and those within it.
The Slayer, and her faithful friend, Wicca, are the true heroes of the piece. Night after night, going out and fighting crime. Night after night, keeping Sunnydale’s fair streets clean of hoodlums and rebels, demons and vampires and everything else that goes bump in the night.
All Rupert can do is keep the house warm for them. Keep the lights turned on and the kitchen stocked. Keep the swords sharp and polished and the crossbows waxed and oiled. And when they come back home in the early morning pre-light, just as the average Sunnydale citizen is hitting snooze on their alarm clocks, Rupert welcomes them with a smile and a mug of hot cocoa.
Sometimes he struggles with his position in the household. Always on the sidelines, never truly fighting the good fight. Always the spectator-the watcher-never the protector. But, in the dead of night when Buffy comes to him for advice, when she tells him her nightmares and dreams, he knows it is all worth it in the end.
To everyone else Rupert is merely Buffy’s faithful manservant. But to Buffy, he’s Giles, the one person who will always be there for her no matter what the circumstance. And that will always make Rupert’s job the most rewarding in the world.
