summary Distance is the leap of faith between lover and friend. Intimacy is the thin line in between.
notes For
mifhe, because we had a discussion about SungyeoL a couple of days back, and because she'll kill me for not posting this.
Myungsoo is closest to Sungyeol for the very simple reason that their ages are the closest to each other. The bond between him and Sungjong is more apparent, but on unbroadcasted stages he shares considerably more intimate moments with Sungyeol - the classic pat on the back, the shy grip on the shoulder, the intertwined hands behind their backs, the stolen kisses before their main stage.
"There's nothing wrong with this," Sungyeol says after one of their escapades. "We're friends. Friends get intimate sometimes."
Myungsoo shrugs. Sungyeol is right. Friends do get intimate sometimes.
But only so much.
Dance practice has just ended and they all shuffle to the van for a nap on their way home. Sungyeol finds the opportunity to tuck his chin on Myungsoo's shoulder. "I'm more comfortable like this," Sungyeol says almost inaudibly, the light laughter on his lips catching on Myungsoo's ears. Myungsoo shrugs and they both fall into a slightly deep trance, a wave of exhaustion enveloping them.
Not so long after, Sunggyu pokes Myungsoo in his side to say, "Hey, we're here. It's time to wake up."
Ten minutes and some nudging after, Sungyeol still isn't awake and probably won't be for the next few hours, so Myungsoo brings him down from the car and hauls him over his back.
He can feel the rhythmic movement in Sungyeol's breathing as he carries the latter to their room, tucking the latter in their makeshift bed. A part of him tells him that Sungyeol isn't asleep and is just making the most out of things, while the other part is telling him to just believe that sleep can actually come to someone like Sungyeol. Myungsoo leans in for a light kiss just to test his theory, and when Sungyeol jerks just lightly and smiles just a little, Myungsoo resolves to himself that Sungyeol's still got a lot to learn to be a better opportunist.
It's one of those days - Sungyeol takes a verbal beating from the trainers and some sharp remarks from the members, mostly about how he isn't trying hard enough. "You know, I'm trying my best, but-" A sigh escapes Sungyeol's lips and he frowns a little. Myungsoo offers a small smile.
"They're just expecting too much."
"Nah. I'm pretty hopeless."
"No, you're not."
"Whatever."
"Hey," Myungsoo begins, uncertainty hanging on his lips. "Don't think about it too much."
It's the closest thing to concern that Myungsoo can offer, and he smiles a little when Sungyeol gets a bit apprehensive, unsure of himself. Sungyeol worries his lip for a while before turning back to Myungsoo.
"I-I'm not," Sungyeol replies in a tiny voice.
Myungsoo walks closer to Sungyeol, his arms soon fitting around Sungyeol's waist. The pat on the back is a stretch, the tight hug even more, and Sungyeol takes a deep breath when Myungsoo tucks his chin on his shoulder.
"Don't try denying. You're obvious. Just look at your face," Myungsoo says, laughing at Sungyeol's obvious surrender. Thoroughly defeated, Sungyeol just shrugs and rests his head on Myungsoo's shoulder, the lack of retaliation enough to comfort him for the rest of the night.
It's been years after their debut and they haven't changed a bit.
Myungsoo's still apprehensive when showing his affection physically in front of the camera, and Sungyeol's still searching for that thing that will make him stand out from the others. "But you already have," Myungsoo reasons out one time, and Sungyeol takes a deep breath.
"It's not enough."
Today, Sungyeol's clutching their Album of the Year award close to his heart, tears streaming down his face. Myungsoo takes it upon himself to make Sungyeol look less like a fool, so he allows former to bury his face in his shoulder, a solid shelter for the quivering soul. Myungsoo feels Sungyeol stiffen just a bit, and he just smiles when a soft sound of surprise escapes Sungyeol's lips.
"What the fuck are you doing?"
"Don't ask. Just cry."
Sungyeol chokes a bit on his tears and they both erupt into a lovely peal of laughter. A few seconds after, Sunggyu gestures for everyone to line up so that they can give everyone a bow for gratitude. Myungsoo slips a hand in Sungyeol's, a gesture brought about by Sunggyu's instructions. Sungyeol still takes it as a surprise, though, quickly turning to Myungsoo with a questioning look.
Myungsoo just smiles in return.
They are closest to each other right now for the simple reason that they are beside each other, but then there's Dongwoo on Sungyeol's right and Sungjong on Myungsoo's left. They can be just as close to other people, too, but then Myungsoo squeezes Sungyeol's hand when they bow, doesn't let go when they exit the stage.
They are friends, after all, and friends get a bit too intimate at times.
Right now, it can't get better than this.
