*sigh* What annoys me about Reimei is that it feels like a wasted opportunity. It could have been an interesting story, but instead so much of it was just exposition. I like your analogy about how it shows Clark Kent before and after he became Superman, but not what happened in between.

I totally agree. The show seems to represent more of Ishida-sensei's own sentimental nationalism than Jiro's life. Real Jiro-san at that time jokingly mentioned that his real profession was farming and politics was his part-time job. That sort of wit is completely missing from Reimei, about which I feel so sorry for the performers.
As for Masako's role, I'd guess Ishida-sensei didn't make any adjustment for Tacchin. As Ume-chan's understudy she should have been prepared to some extent by the time of the accident (I believe the Reimei shonichi was only a week away).
