I'm really excited about NaNo too! Not sure if I'm doing original or fanfic this time, I've done both.
With regards to the publishing thing, not sure if you know him but copperbadge is one of my favorite people to follow online and he self-publishes his original fiction via Lulu.com. While you can purchase the books and he gets paid for each book, he also makes the PDF downloadable for free.
He's in the process of putting out another book (non-fiction this time) and made a post explaining his process on the editing side of it. I highly recommend going through his posts on the subject (the tags are really useful), it's very informative. Plus he's funny :D
