I think you ought to write it using the spellings that are natural to you, because it's you writing - and to use two different types of spellings for spoken dialogue is perhaps a little OTT. However, where I would be tempted to use different spellings is for anything written - e.g. a letter, or a note etc - where that would make sense. Also, I very much believe that in terms of choice of words - e.g. sidewalk vs. pavement - it is correct to adjust what people say in terms of their nationality, if at all possible.

It's just that normally I would change my spellings, because I'd be writing an American POV. Bloody Australian, messing things up, lol. That's a good point about anything written. And yes, the speech would be according to nationality. Oh, I am so confused. And also suspecting myself of overthinking, as usual.

you're a british writer, writing a story, use british spellings. your characters are the ones of different nationality, therefore anything they speak/write should be the only things that change.

But that's the thing, I'm British, in an American fandom, writing an Australian. It's so confusing. Even William POV should be with British spellings, do you think?

Also I think with dialouge, it'd be more in the delivery and the language than the spelling that would make the impact. But I agree with esclarmonde2907. If it's an email or a text message or whatever, MGC is going to spell it one way and William is going to spell it the other.

Just do what feels comfortable yeah? Don't stress out too much because ultimatly everyone knows Michael is Australian and William is American and there is a cultural gap.

Yeah, the dialogue is what I want to get right - which is where you come in, obviously.

I would love to be able to say it doesn't matter but there's usually someone ready and waiting to jump down your throat for doing it the wrong way. If you're writing American people then I think it's probably fair to use American words, spelling, etc. But the same should apply to any Australian/English/French (idk) people you add into it.

I guess it's the way I feel when people write Harry Potter fic in American and say "mom" and "dude" (even though I say dude). I'm just too nice to say anything about it.

Of course, it's only a fic, so I wouldn't worry too much about every little bit.

Exactly, I can't stand that. I once read a Libsfic where Peter and Carl walked along the sidewalk to get to their apartment, and ugh. It's why I'm a bit fascist about betas on albion_fic, but it's also partly why I'm so damn confused now.

I think I'm going to use British/Aus spellings with an explanation. Yes, I am defs overthinking.
