This is my 5th contribution for 14valentines. You can read the rest of the contributions here

There are lots of picture under the cut from an Uncut article on the 30 Greatest Smiths songs with reviews from people like Oasis, Gerard Way, Ryan Adams, Brandon Flowers, etc etc, and a nice little introduction by Marr.

I'd probably be shot some places for saying this, but I've never really been much for The Smiths. There's a few songs I like, but I don't think I ever "got" them. Having said that, I'm downloading this anyway, because I liked your comments on the songs. Giving them a go again. :)

I can understand why. I'm not a militant Smiths fan at all. I hope you have fun, anyway :)

I LOVE The Smiths. They are the band I always come back to. Thanks for the awesome scans - it's pretty adorable seeing Brett Anderson and Ryan Adams and Nicky Wire coming over all fanboy. :DDD

wire - "as a bit of a gobshite myself..." - me, wire and moz are the gobshite triplets.

we are moz and marr but i hope without the acrimonious falling out because that would not be pleasant. also i won't start making dodgy remarks about immigration and exposing myself aged fifty on record sleeves. but maybe you'll join the cribs.

reading that has really made me smile, it's always nice to see an outpouring of love for your favourite band. although i'm quite shocked that nobody picked "still ill" - i don't have one favourite smiths song, being a megafan, but "still ill" is one of my top five. i'm glad "rubber ring" was there which is also a favourite, and "the headmaster ritual" and "barbarism begins at home" but why no "rusholme ruffians"? or "shakespeare's sister"?

"i thought that if you had an acoustic guitar then it meant that you were a protest singer...oh i can laugh about it now but at the time it was terrible!"

sorry this has turned into an epic. my thoughts on the smiths cannot be contained.

I KNOW! It's like lol Wire be more ridiculous please.

I do already have a step in with the Cribs obviously, so maaaaybe.

I'm surprised no one chose Shakespeare's Sister - or, more accurately, that Uncut didn't. Cos I'm sure they made the chart and then just found people.

No please talk more!

yeah i think they just made it up as well which is why i'm surprised there's no "still ill" - it contains one of my favourite lyrics ever - "does the body rule the mind or does the mind rule the body? i dunno." - genius!!!!!

since we are on the smiths, what is your favourite smiths album? mine changes regularly but today it is "meat is murder," not least because i saw a stupid girl at uni wearing a stupid fur coat - i honestly think that i could be one of those militant vegetarians throwing paint at such fucking idiotic people. we're not living in the arctic circle, we don't need animal skin coats! also because "meat is murder" is an awesome album.

also another classic from "still ill" - "under the iron bridge we kissed/and although i ended up with sore lips/it just wasn't like the old days anymore" - i wish i'd written that!

I agree, both those lyrics are immense.

I like Hatful of Hollow a LOT, but my favourite is probably The Queen is Dead. HoH doesn't count anyway, does it?
