Just by looking at him you could tell that he was dangerous. There was a cigarette clutched tightly between his fingers and he wore leather and chains. His nails were painted a distinct shade of black and his dark hair obscured his eyes. Sungmin did everything in his power to avoid danger, especially dangerous people. He didn't like putting himself in any situations where he may be hurt. He was the good kid; he listened to his parents and his teachers and he was always in the top of his class. So why would he do this? Why would he purposefully put himself in danger? The dark haired 18 year old lent down and kissed Sungmin and Sungmin eagerly reciprocated. The one thing he couldn’t figure out was why he would start putting himself in danger now.
Sungmin stared down at the cafeteria food on his tray. The school’s food wasn’t gourmet, but it looked especially worse than usual and Sungmin just couldn’t bring himself to eat anything. Suddenly Donghae slid into the chair beside him with a panicked look on his face and everyone at the table turned to look at him. Everyone was waiting with anticipation for what kind of gossip Donghae had gotten hold of this time.
“Guys, guys, guys!” Donghae screeched, “There’s this new student that just transferred and apparently he was kicked out of his last one because he beat up a whole group of students who had only asked him for directions.”
Suddenly the table was full of sighs of disbelief and a couple people muttered “Not again Donghae” and everything went as usual. Suddenly Eunhyuk spoke up. Now this was an anomaly in itself seeing as Eunhyuk rarely talked or voiced his opinions.
“He’s in my homeroom,” Eunhyuk said softly, “And he looks really scary. He’s wearing leather and his nails are painted black with this white skull design. He’s got a bunch of chains all over his clothes and he started smoking during class but when the teacher told him to put the cigarette away he just ignored him.” Eunhyuk practically shrank in his seat before whispering, “He scares me.”
Everyone just stared at Eunhyuk. That had probably been the most words he’d ever used in a month let alone a day. That was when people started to get scared because, hey, if Eunhyuk starts talking about something you know that it’s got to be true.
Donghae jumped up and yelled, “See! See! There is a dangerous person at our school!” Donghae suddenly started freaking out, “What if he kills us all! What if he starts beating us all up! Oh my god! What do we do!?”
Sungmin just stared at his food. Was there really such a dangerous person at their school? Why would the school even let someone like that in? The food on Sungmin’s plate suddenly looked even less appetizing than it had before and he pushed it away. Sungmin did everything he could to stay away from danger but now it seemed like it was right under his roof. How on earth could he possibly go to school now that he knew that someone dangerous was there? Sungmin looked around the table only to see people discussing this potentially dangerous student and Donghae pestering the quiet Eunhyuk for more details on the transfer student he had yet to see. Slowly Sungmin got up and headed to his next class, chemistry.
Sungmin was the only person without a lab partner and he was happy that it stayed that way. His classmates knew that he would rather do things on his own than let a partner take some of the work and risk blowing them both up. Sungmin waited at his lab station for class to start and nearly had a heart attack when a figure he didn’t recognize made his way in behind Professor Leeteuk.
He was just as Eunhyuk had described him; nothing but crazy leather and chains coupled with a spiky black hairstyle and black nails. Sungmin suddenly wished that he hadn’t scared his other lab partners off. Professor Kim suddenly spoke, “Class, this is Kim Jongwoon. He’s new so treat him well okay?” The teacher looked at Jongwoon, “Jongwoon-ssi, is there anything you’d like to say?”
“I prefer Yesung.” The student replied rudely before striding into the classroom and sitting in the only available seat. The seat that just so happened to be next to Sungmin’s seat.
Sungmin immediately tensed up. He could not believe that this dangerous new student who looked like some sort of gang member and who had supposedly beat a group of students was sitting next to him. It did not take much to send Sungmin into mini internal panic attacks, but this situation was one where he couldn’t even remember to breathe let alone listen to whatever the hell Professor Kim was talking about.
Sungmin spent the next week in a state of complete and total panic. He always dreaded lunch because after lunch was chemistry and chemistry was the sole class where he had to sit next to a complete lunatic. After that first class of total panic Sungmin had started to come to class earlier than usual to set up his barrier of textbooks between himself and Kim Jongwoon. Not only that but he had started getting into the habit of sitting and the far edge of the table that they shared so that he wouldn’t be in close proximity with the student.
This all changed the Monday after the new student had come. Professor Kim was forgetful, and the thing he forgot about most was telling them about labs. That Monday was one of the many labs he had forgotten to tell them about.
Sungmin was dreading it. Not only had he been unable to pay attention in class since Kim Jongwoon started sitting next to him but the experiment that they were supposed to do involved the Bunsen Burner and fire and Sungmin didn’t trust his new lab partner to not blow them up. Unfortunately Kim Jongwoon had actually been paying attention in class that week.
Considering the way he was dressed Sungmin had expected him to not have a clue about what he was doing but Jongwoon was surprisingly very good at chemistry. He wore his safety goggles over his kohl-rimmed eyes and he had even tied his hair back to prevent it from catching on fire. Jongwoon smirked at Sungmin and said,
“I noticed that you haven’t been paying much attention, just follow my instructions and you should be fine.”
Sungmin’s chemistry period consisted of him handing Jongwoon different materials while Jongwoon explained to him what he was doing and why. Sungmin spent that period learning everything he had missed that week from Jongwoon while Jongwoon completed the lab. Sungmin had to admit that Jongwoon was surprisingly smart, but that didn’t make him less dangerous.
The first time Sungmin talked to his lab partner outside of class was a week later. It was already the last week of November and Sungmin’s older brother Leeteuk was supposed to pick him up since it was practically a blizzard outside. Unfortunately his brother was over twenty minutes late and Sungmin was freezing in his thin winter jacket. Suddenly Jongwoon approached him. Jongwoon was staring at him. All he did was stare at Sungmin and Sungmin couldn’t help how nervous he was with the older boy just looking at him like that.
“You’re going to get cold.” Jongwoon stated.
“Um, yeah. I’m waiting for my brother though, he should be here soon.” Sungmin replied anxiously.
Jongwoon took off his leather jacket and put it on Sungmin’s shoulders.
“Here this should keep you warm.”
“Don’t you need it? It’s really cold outside.”
“Nah, I don’t live far away.”
As Jongwoon left Sungmin couldn’t help but feel confused at the gesture. Why would someone like Jongwoon lend him his jacket? Sungmin already had the boy’s entire character set up in his head but this kind gesture didn’t seem to be the kind of thing that someone like Jongwoon did. As Sungmin watched the older boy walk away from him he couldn’t help but feel something. To him it seemed to be a mixture of confusion and gratitude mixed in with a little something else that he wasn’t able to place.
Sungmin’s brother arrived a half hour later with the excuse that the blizzard had made traffic really bad and to his defense he did look really sorry but Leeteuk immediately noticed the dark leather spiky jacket over Sungmin’s thin pink one and asked him about it. Sungmin assured him that a classmate had lent it to him since he had been cold. Leeteuk still had a worried and confused look in his eyes but told Sungmin to return it the next day. Sungmin kept the jacket.
Two weeks later they were assigned a project. It was fairly simple in nature but to be due before the last day of school before the holiday break which made a groan of protest echo throughout the chemistry lab. Yesung’s house was closer to the school so they agreed that Sungmin would come with him after school to get a head start on the project.
To say that Sungmin was nervous was an understatement. Throughout the short walk to Jongwoon’s house he had been worried, edgy and jumpy. He knew that Jongwoon wasn’t about to beat him up anytime soon but he couldn’t help but wonder what his house would be like or whether it would have any distinguishing feature that would make it particularly dangerous. Sooner than Sungmin wished they arrived at Jongwoon’s house and to his surprise it was a cheerful looking house with a small snow-covered garden and cute little garden gnomes adorning it.
Everything about the situation was odd to Sungmin. Every action that Jongwoon made just did not match up with the image Sungmin had built up in his brain the first time he had seen Jongwoon. First he had proved that he was intelligent by doing very well in the lab that they had been assigned while Sungmin hadn’t had a clue as to what they were doing. Then he decided to be nice and offer Sungmin his jacket as he was waiting in the cold while Sungmin pictured him to be someone who wouldn’t care. Now it was the garden gnomes. The garden gnomes and the cute cheerful house that screamed the opposite of danger while Jongwoon embodied it. Sungmin just couldn’t wrap his head around it.
They entered the house and it seemed even cheerier on the inside the thing that surprised him most was that even Jongwoon’s room was cheery. The walls were painted a nice spring green and the only thing depressing was the black bed sheets.
“You look surprised.” Jongwoon said suddenly and Sungmin couldn’t help but notice a tinge of disappointment in his eyes.
“O-oh w-well it’s j-just that I exp-p-pected something a l-little di-different.” Sungmin couldn’t even hide his stuttering as he replied.
Suddenly Jongwoon grinned a little. It was a small smile but it was the first smile of his that hadn’t been sarcastic or mean and it made Sungmin feel all warm inside.
“W-well we sh-should g-get started on the p-project J-jongwoon.” Sungmin continued.
“I actually prefer to be called Yesung. I don’t really like Jongwoon.” Jongwoon still had that small smile on is face and it made Sungmin even more anxious.
“S-sorry. I’ll c-call y-you Ye-yesung if y-you w-want.”
Jongwoon stood closer to Sungmin and surprisingly Sungmin didn’t mind. Their faces were only inches apart and Sungmin could feel the older boy’s breath on his face.
“Though, I don’t think I’d mind if you called me Jongwoon.” The older whispered softly.
Suddenly there was something on his lips. It was soft and gently and it just happened to be Jongwoon’s lips. Just then Sungmin surprised himself with what he did next. He kissed back. They broke apart and Sungmin blushed an embarrassing red. Jongwoon then surprised him again. He chuckled softly and pulled Sungmin into a hug.
“You’re adorable, you know that?” Jongwoon whispered into his ear.
Sungmin decided that sometimes, but only sometimes, a little danger was a good thing.
