They say rumours aren’t your best sort of information, and that’s putting it lightly. So who exactly spread the rumour that Sungmin and Kyuhyun were dating? No one knew, but that wasn’t the point. The main problem, at least where Kim Heechul was concerned, was that no one knew the rumours weren’t true. The entire dorm, save the two who were right at the center of it all, thought that Sungmin and Kyuhyun were in a relationship, which brings us to Heechul’s dilemma.
This was the… seventy-fifth? time he’d woken up abruptly after having the most wonderful dream about him and Sungmin, hand in hand and strolling peacefully along Sakura-lined stone paths. Unfortunately, his dream had been rudely interrupted by that annoying bastard everyone else called ‘waking up’. Never mind that waking up was a necessity; Heechul disliked it nonetheless, because it interrupted his fantasies- ones that would never come true, because Sungmin would never love him the way he did the aegyo king.
Hence, he never ever thought to clarify things with Sungmin, because if he had only asked, Sungmin would have told him in immense surprise that there was nothing going on between him and Kyuhyun… and also that he shared the same feelings. However, Heechul being Heechul, although a loud mouth and spoilt princess, would never try to break up another couple’s relationship by doing such a thing, and so his feelings remained a secret.
On the other hand, Sungmin, being the shy, introverted member he was, would have never dreamed of going up to Heechul and confessing his true feelings, because with the way Heechul was surrounded by girl group members and pretty female actors, and with the way he flirted when around them, there was absolutely no way Heechul even swung the way he did.
Funny how love works, isn’t it?
Telling the whole story would take too long (and require too much hard disk space, which I, sadly, do not possess), and so, almost two years after Heechul first realised he was more than a little infatuated with one Lee Sungmin, he found himself in a bar, downing glass after glass of alcohol, to try and forget his unrequited feelings for said Lee Sungmin. Foolish, yes, but even idols need a way out sometimes.
Hence, within an hour or so of drinking, Heechul found himself alone in a private room off the main bar, drunk off his rocker and unable to even stand up on his feet properly. He found that out the hard way- literally- and that was how the bartender found him when he next entered the room.
“Damn, Heechul, I’ll get someone from your dorm to come get you,” he said with a sympathetic sigh as he eyed the heap on the floor in front of him. Heechul just grunted, too busy attempting to figure out which side of the room was up. The bartender, who was also the owner of the bar and Heechul’s old-time friend, left the room, pulling out his cellphone as he did so.
“Hello? …Oh, is he okay? …Okay, I’ll come get him. Give me ten minutes,” Sungmin said before hanging up. He happened to be the only one in the dorm, the others on his floor being busy with their own schedules, which explained why he was the only one around. He quickly grabbed his car keys and wallet, before leaving the dorm and locking the door behind him.
He drove quickly to the bar, where the bar owner led him quickly to Heechul’s private room before any fangirls could discover his presence. Sungmin immediately furrowed his brows, even more worried than before, because Heechul, who rarely lost himself like that, was plastered.
“Come on hyung, let’s get you home,” Sungmin said softly as he looped one of Heechul’s arms over his shoulder. Heechul grunted again, his head lolling slightly against Sungmin’s shoulder. “Dunwanna,” he mumbled, nuzzling his face into the crook of Sungmin’s neck. “Drinwime,” he added, which Sungmin took to mean ‘drink with me’.
“You’re drunk, hyung. You need to get home and rest,” Sungmin said firmly, swallowing discreetly at the feeling of Heechul nuzzling his neck. He and the bartender practically hauled Heechul out of the room and to Sungmin’s car, where Sungmin grabbed a stack of bank notes out of his wallet and handed them to the bartender.
“Will this cover it?” he asked, but the bartender just shook his head. “Keep it. You know, I’ve never seen anyone offer so willingly to pay for Heechul’s tab before. The last time he was here he was with Jungmo, who refused to pay Heechul’s bill and just instructed me to put it on his tab. You’re a new one,” he said with a smile. Sungmin flushed, but retracted his hand and climbed into the driver’s seat, Heechul having already been buckled into the passenger seat.
“Hello, nice o’you t’come pick me,” Heechul drawled, reaching out and stroking Sungmin’s thigh. Sungmin gulped, trying to shrink away from Heechul. “Hyung, go to sleep. I’ll wake you when we get home,” he said. Heechul pouted. “Dun wanna. You pretty. Kish me,” he slurred, but then, thankfully, his eyelids drooped and his head lolled to the side as he fell asleep.
“Wait… Did hyung just say… kiss me…?”
As he drove, Sungmin kept glancing over to Heechul in extreme worry. Heechul was usually sensible- and could hold his liquor decently well, so him getting plastered like that meant something had to be really wrong. He wished he could be the one to ask Heechul and help him, but he didn’t have that right. Some unknown girl probably did, but Sungmin didn’t know who, if any at all, and so his only option was to swallow his own feelings and help his hyung out as much as he could, like a good dongsaeng should.
When they arrived back at the dorms, Sungmin was surprised to see that there was no one around in the upper floor either- but in a way that was a relief. He supported Heechul all the way to his room, lowering him onto his bed and tugging his coat and socks off. “I’ll get you pajamas, hyung,” he said, grabbing a pair from Heechul’s wardrobe and handing them to him. “Here. Do you need help?”
Instead of answering, Heechul tossed the change of clothes to one side of the bed, before grabbing Sungmin’s arm and tugging him down to sit on the bed as well. He then transferred his hold to Sungmin’s shoulders, gripping them firmly, his slightly hazed-over eyes gazing intently into Sungmin’s own confused ones.
Colour crept slowly up Sungmin’s cheeks, and as Heechul slowly leaned forward, he let out a small squeak and tried to lean back to avoid the older man. Heechul would allow no such thing, however, and with a quick tug at Sungmin’s shoulders he unceremoniously pulled him close and crashed their lips together.
“He’s kissing me… The love of my life is kissing me… Am I dreaming?”
Taken aback at the sudden rushing of events, Sungmin struggled slightly to push Heechul away, but his own feelings were overwhelming him and he was unable to resist Heechul’s soft lips on his own. He willingly gave in to Heechul’s tongue, which was tracing patterns on his bottom lip, and his lips parted to allow Heechul’s tongue to slip quickly in.
They shared a heated kiss, tongues clashing together and bodies pressed tightly against one another’s- when had Sungmin’s hands ended up on Heechul’s waist?- and he moaned as Heechul’s lips parted from his only to clamp onto his neck and bite and suck, but the feeling of Heechul’s hand slipping under his shirt had Sungmin jerking to his senses.
With a burst of strength, he pulled away from a surprised Heechul, pushing the older member backwards onto his bed before bolting out of the room as quickly as he could. Guilt and unhappiness overwhelmed him, and he sprinted the short distance back down to his own floor as fast as he could, tearing through the dorm and into his own room before throwing himself on his own bed.
The next morning, a frustrated Kyuhyun stormed out of the room he shared with Sungmin. He stalked up to Heechul, who was hanging around the lower dorm with a slight headache, and confronted him. “Yah, hyung, what did you do to Sungmin-hyung last night?” he demanded abruptly, never mind that Heechul was older and he hadn’t even bothered with a ‘good morning’ or any other formalities.
Heechul looked up in surprise, annoyed at the pounding in his head. “Yah, what’s with the attitude? What’s up with Sungmin?” he asked, disgruntled. Kyuhyun folded his arms angrily. “He refuses to budge from his bed, his eyes are swollen and red, and he looks like someone wrenched his heart out and used it for target practice! What did you do to him last night?”
Heechul frowned, startled- all he remembered from last night was him drinking at the bar, and someone helping him home. That someone must have been Sungmin, but that still didn’t explain what all this had to do with it. “Am I supposed to know? He’s your boyfriend, go comfort him. Why are you coming to me?”
Kyuhyun blinked, the wind taken out of his sails, then he suddenly burst out laughing despite his worry. “Oh my god,” he gasped. “You think Sungmin-hyung and I are together? Hell no, we’re best friends! Eww, you think we’re dating. That’s so gross!” he added, making a face.
Heechul’s eyes widened in shock- and so did the eyes of the few other members who were scattered around the living room. “You mean you two aren’t dating?” someone’s voice called out, but Kyuhyun couldn’t be bothered to register whose it was. He looked remarkably disturbed, though. “Why the hell would all of you think that?”
The others, a suddenly rather delighted Heechul included, decided wisely not to push it, instead quickly going to back to whatever they had been doing before- which, in Heechul’s case, was talking about Sungmin. Kyuhyun raised one eyebrow as he recalled their previous topic. “Anyway, hyung, you’d best be dealing with Sungmin-hyung yourself,” he insisted.
“How do you even know I’m the one to come to?” Heechul challenged, suddenly feeling rather worried despite himself. Kyuhyun looked annoyed at having to explain himself so much. “Cos you’re the one whose drunk ass he hauled back all by himself last night,” he said roughly (“how the hell did he know that?”), “and I don't know what you did to him, but I’ve never seen him so miserable in my life.”
For the first time in a long time, Heechul actually looked unnerved. He stood up without a word, entering Sungmin’s room and shutting the door behind him. “Sungmin?” he said softly.
Sungmin was curled up on his bed, almost completely buried under his blankets, and the lump that was all that could be seen of the member was shaking slightly. “Go away, I already said I don’t want to talk,” he mumbled, obviously thinking it was Kyuhyun who had reentered the room.
“It’s me, Heechul,” Heechul said, approaching the bed. Sungmin immediately sat up in alarm before shrinking away towards the wall. Heechul sat himself down on Sungmin’s bed, very much alarmed now, because Sungmin looked terrified. “What happened?” he asked, frowning.
Sungmin glanced at him with reddened eyes, before looking away again. “Nothing,” he mumbled. Heechul pursed his lips. “Look, you’re a wreck right now so you can’t tell me nothing happened. To be honest, I can’t remember what happened between us yesterday, but Kyuhyun told me you were the one who brought me home, which means that it has to have something to do with me. So spill, what happened?” he said insistently.
“Nothing happened, hyung,” Sungmin said stubbornly, moving backwards as far as he could until the headboard stopped him in his tracks. “It’s nothing, really. It’s just me, getting too worked up over things as usual,” he added in a mumble, so soft that Heechul barely caught it.
Heechul shifted to face Sungmin more fully, folding his arms across his chest and sitting there expectantly. “I’m not moving until you tell me what’s wrong, and I mean it,” he said firmly, “so Lee Sungmin, you’d better- what’s that on your neck?” he said abruptly as Sungmin’s one piece slid slightly off his shoulder as he moved- to reveal a red mark that could only have gotten there in one way.
“Crap, he saw it!”
Sungmin tugged his clothing back up quickly. “Mosquito bite,” he said, not looking at Heechul. Heechul’s eyes narrowed. “You can’t fool me, that’s- wait- oh fuck,” he cursed, rubbing his face with his hands. He mumbled, “what exactly did I do to you, Sungmin?”
Sungmin shook his head and smiled shakily to reassure Heechul. “Nothing, really. I left before things got out of hand, so we didn’t do anything,” he said, but unfortunately that only seemed to make Heechul more worked up. “But still! I practically took advantage of you!” Heechul said forcefully, anger at himself blazing in his eyes. “I’m sorry,” he heard, and looked up to see the fear and sadness that had appeared in Sungmin’s eyes.
His face softened immediately. “It’s not your fault. I’m the one to blame- I shouldn’t have gotten drunk like that, not for a stupid reason like- oh, never mind,” he stopped himself just in time, remembering exactly what feelings had overwhelmed him yesterday. “Anyway, you probably hate me now, don’t you? So I’ll just… leave…” he mumbled, heart sinking as he got up.
He tried to leave the room, but quick as a flash Sungmin shot out an arm and curled his fingers around Heechul’s slim wrist. “No, please don’t go. I’m not angry. I don’t hate you. I could never hate you,” he whispered pleadingly.
Heechul turned, and when he saw the sincerity in those red but still beautiful eyes, he finally smiled slightly and remained where he was. “Then why did you cry, and why are you refusing to come out?” he asked, knowing that Sungmin rarely ever cried, so if he wasn’t angry, then why did all this affect him so much?
“Because I didn’t know how to face you,” Sungmin confessed, to Heechul’s immense surprise. He hung his head, letting his hand fall away from Heechul’s wrist. He rubbed his eyes roughly, pushing away the blankets from around him before standing up and going to the window overlooking the nearby park.
Leaning against the cool window, he said softly, “I know I’m over-reacting, and I know you think nothing of the kiss, but I’m sorry, I can’t bring myself to forget or even overlook it. It’s just… I don’t know how to say it; but-“ his words died on his lips when he felt Heechul’s body leaning against his, Heechul’s arms resting against the window frame, one flanking each side of his waist.
“Sungmin, look at me,” Heechul said gently, and, after a brief hesitation, Sungmin turned to face Heechul, his back resting against the window. What he saw made his breath hitch, because the look in Heechul’s eyes was one he’d never ever seen before, and he hardly dared to believe it.
“Hyung looks… like he likes me…?”
“Did you know that in my whole life, I’ve rarely ever allowed anyone in my heart, because feelings are something I’m not very willing to have to deal with. You, you oversensitive, too cute for your own good pumpkin, managed to do something no one has ever managed to do so well- carve a niche into my heart, and stay there. Do you know what you do to me, Sungmin?” His eyes were boring into Sungmin’s.
“H-Hyung?” Sungmin whispered, “do you like me?” “I do,” Heechul replied honestly, “and have for two years. I always believed you were with Kyuhyun! I never told you about my feelings for you, oh how foolish I was! I’m sorry I made you so sad, Sungmin, but I really-“
This time, it was Heechul’s turn to be cut off abruptly, and by Sungmin’s lips on his no less. “Payback for last night,” Sungmin mumbled into Heechul’s lips, wrapping his arms around Heechul’s neck and allowing Heechul to press his body back into the window glass. The iron frame was digging into his lower back rather uncomfortably, but all he could focus on was how good Heechul’s lips felt against his when both of them were equally aware of each other and what they did to each other.
“If this is a dream, then I never want to wake up.”
Those were the thoughts running through Sungmin’s head right now; he couldn’t believe Heechul actually felt the same about him! Maybe he wasn’t in paradise, but this came pretty much close. They parted reluctantly, Heechul’s arms still resting on the windowsill to support himself, and Sungmin’s arms wrapped tightly around him. Heechul leaned in and rested their foreheads together, face flushed but smiling widely.
“I like you, Sungmin. A lot. So would you do the honour of becoming my boyfriend?” “I- wait, do the honour? Isn’t it supposed to be- oh never mind. Yes, yes I would!” Sungmin laughed- that was so Heechul- before allowing Heechul to capture his lips again.
Outside the room, Kyuhyun, who had his ear pressed to the door listening intently, grinned in triumph. Yeah, he’d known about Sungmin’s feelings for Heechul for a long time, and he’d also seen the way Heechul would look at Sungmin when Sungmin wasn’t looking- but being the evil maknae he was, who said he had to do anything about it? Nah, he was more than happy to be an amused spectator.
Anyway, according to the sounds he was currently hearing, it seemed that Heechul and Sungmin had more than settled their issues.
