A Beautiful Mind.
Choi Siwon and Lee Sungmin are great friends, or so he tells everyone. The only problem is, none of Siwon's acquaintances have actually seen said friend. When Siwon is asked where Sungmin is, the answer is always evasive.
"Oh, he's working". "He has a big exam tomorrow, so he's studying". "His mother is ill, so he's visiting her."
Siwon's acquaintances don't think much of the answers and don't probe. Why would they? Siwon is a nice, friendly, intelligent, charming young man. They only really use him and his intelligence to pass classes.
Sungmin understands him. He always does. They're more than great friends--they're the best of friends, really. Well, they were, until a certain person by the name of Kim Heechul enters Siwon's life in a flurry.
Soon, Siwon is plagued by Sungmin's incessant, complaining voice.
"You never spend any time with me anymore! I thought we're best friends!"
Siwon looks helplessly at Heechul, and Heechul smiles understandingly.
"Come on Siwon, let's go for a walk," Heechul says.
The cool air does wonders for Siwon, and he's soon in high spirits again.
"You don't think Sungmin is jealous of us, do you?" Siwon asks.
Heechul stops abruptly and looks at Siwon strangely. "Us?"
"Yes, us." There is a pause as Siwon takes Heechul's delicate hands into his own. "Heechul," he says after taking a deep breath, "I really like you, and I would like to know... I would like to know if you're free Friday night. Andwouldyouliketogotodinnerwithme." Siwon's face is nothing short of bright red now.
Heechul gives Siwon a shy smile. "Yes, that'd be nice," he says, and starts walking again.
----------
"What the hell, Siwon?!" yells Sungmin, livid with rage. "You said you're going to watch me sing Friday night at the club!"
Siwon apologizes sincerely, but he feels the beginnings of a headache coming on.
"No! I won't accept your apology. This is the millionth time you've blown me off since you've met that freak!"
"SHUT UP!!" roars Siwon, at his wit's end. His voice echoes off the walls of his dorm eerily. "Please."
The sound of bare feet running breaks the deafening silence that follows Siwon's passionate plea. A frantic knocking interrupts Sungmin's retort.
Siwon gets up wearily from his bed to answer his door. It's Cho Kyuhyun, the boy genius next door, and his burly roommate, Kim Youngwoon.
"Siwon! Are you okay?" Kyuhyun asks breathlessly. Youngwoon stands behind Kyuhyun inconspicuously, but at the same time taking in every detail in front of him. "I heard someone yelling and thought--"
"I'm fine," Siwon says curtly. "Sungmin and I were having an argument, that's all."
"Oh, he's here?" Kyuhyun asks immediately and tries to peek into the room. Siwon's frame blocks most of the room from Kyuhyun's view, but it doesn't stop Youngwoon from seeing an otherwise empty room. Not wanting to embarrass Siwon, Kyuhyun quickly says something else. "I'm sorry, you must've been arguing on the phone."
"Yeah..." Siwon says uncertainly, then confirms the answer firmly. "Yes. Yes, I was."
"Right then, we'll be going now," Kyuhyun says awkwardly. He knows something is up, or wrong, with Siwon. First, it is apparent that no one else is in the room. Second, phones aren't even allowed in dorms. Third, this isn't the first time Kyuhyun and Youngwoon found themselves, along with Siwon, in the same situation.
Kyuhyun returns to his room with Heechul on his mind. He thinks of warning the older student, as he knows Siwon is fond of Heechul (perhaps a little too fond?), but temporarily forgets about the issue once he enters his own room--a long night of studying weighs itself heavily on Kyuhyun's shoulders. It sits in the back of his brilliant mind for the rest of the night and early morning.
-------------
Three dates and two movie nights pass, and Siwon and Heechul couldn't be any happier. Sungmin and his infuriating complaining voice has left Siwon alone for two blissful weeks, and Siwon enjoys the freedom. He's unaware of Kyuhyun's progress in figuring Siwon out. If he knew, he (or Sungmin) would probably consider Kyuhyun meddling in his private life.
Kyuhyun has been slipping pills into Siwon's food and drink. It's the reason why Sungmin has left him alone for a fortnight. See, Siwon is schizophrenic. Sungmin isn't a real person at all. He's just an auditory hallucination, a voice Siwon hears, and has been hearing, since the summer after graduating from high school. It's only recently that Sungmin has gotten out of hand. Kyuhyun is no psychology student, but he's studied enough of the subject to recognize the symptoms.
Unfortunately, Siwon goes on holiday and is therefore out of the unknown care of Kyuhyun for four days. Not only that, but Siwon himself still thinks Sungmin is a very real person indeed. He returns, and more malicious than ever, the first night as Siwon is sitting at home, in his room, reading Hamlet for his class.
"So you love Heechul, eh?" Sungmin whispers in Siwon's ear. Siwon cringes frightenedly at his voice. He hasn't heard it in a while, and the shock was unpleasant.
"If you love him so much, why have you never even kissed him?" hisses Sungmin as he slides into Siwon's lap. (What's really in Siwon's lap are his own hands.) Siwon scowls darkly, but doesn't respond.
"Why are you so weak?" Sungmin's (his own) wandering hands are all over Siwon's broad chest.
"Stop," asserts Siwon, but he knows Sungmin is right. What's so bad about a kiss? "I respect him," he says weakly as Sungmin's (his own) hands travel lower.
Sungmin cackles and voices Siwon's very thought. "What's so bad about a kiss?" For emphasis, Sungmin kisses Siwon roughly, biting his lower lip and causing the tiny blood vessels underneath to burst, effectively bruising Siwon's lip. Or maybe it was Siwon who brutally bit his own lip.
"Get away from me," growls Siwon and shoves Sungmin off and onto the floor.
Sungmin leaves for the night, but returns the next. And the next two nights as well. Always the same, unknown to Siwon, Sungmin was manipulating him, intending to hurt Heechul in the worst way possible. Sungmin always leaves Siwon flustered, impossibly turned on, and helpless. But during these four days, Siwon finally feels. It's a surreal feeling, after two weeks of his emotions suppressed by "the medication" (Sungmin purrs) Kyuhyun gave him.
------------
Siwon finally cracks when he returns. Feeling absolutely nothing at all for the two weeks prior to his sensationally and emotionally overloading vacation, upon seeing Heechul, he pins him to the wall.
At first, it's just a kiss. Heechul's eyes widen with mild surprise, but he's secretly pleased Siwon has finally gotten over his tenacity. Then Siwon's hands slide up into Heechul's long, silky hair. Heechul sighs contently and encircles his arms around Siwon. All was going well until Sungmin's unwanted voice sounded in Siwon's ear.
"Just fuck him. You know you want to. Look how willing he is," Sungmin drawls, voice dripping with venom and malice.
Siwon does. His mouth attacks Heechul's neck, tarnishing the skin with dark bruises as his hands work frantically at his belt buckle. He forces Heechul's pants down and slams him against the wall, Sugmin's voice egging him on. Siwon doesn't see the terrified look in Heechul's eyes. He doesn't feel Heechul quivering. He doesn't hear Heechul begging, crying, yelling at him to stop. He grips Heechul's arms tightly in a hand, the other forcing his cock into Heechul, unprepared. Blood runs down his legs in angry crimson streaks and Heechul's vision swims sickeningly.
Heechul screams at the pain, screams at the memories, screams for help. In an act of divine intervention in the form of Kyuhyun and Youngwoon, he is saved, somewhat. Saved from the present, but certainly not from his past.
The appearance of the two is like a douse of icy water for Siwon. Sungmin's voice vanishes as Youngwoon's fist connects with Siwon's jaw. He's knocked out cold. The two carry Heechul carefully away to the nurse's office before coming back with the campus police for Siwon.
Poor Siwon. Nothing is really his fault, and yet the blame had to be placed somewhere. When Siwon finally regains consciousness, he finds himself immobilized and strapped to a pristinely white hospital bed. He lookes around him and sees the walls surrounding him are a harsh white color, the fluorescent lights from overhead casts the room in an unnatural white, and the eerie silence surrounding him is only broken by his ragged breathing.
He calls out, but instead of his voice echoing like he's expecting, it's muffled. Initially, that doesn't deter Siwon, but after repeating this futile attempt for hours until his voice is completely gone, he finally accepts that he will be confined within the asylum. He doesn't even have Sungmin to keep him company anymore.
Sungmin, Siwon decides, is definitely not his friend anymore. Nope, he thinks, I have replaced him with a new friend who calls himself Kim Kibum.
